About this deal

Once you've successfully stumbled through the first round, you move to the second. This time, each player receives two cards, the rounds getting progressively harder in this fashion. And each time you'll feel like you've just barely eked out your win from the last round. But through this, you consistently feel like you're getting better as a group, from round to round and session to session. This unique, special little game plays in 20 minutes or less and acts as both a main course for board game nights and as a palette cleanser, perhaps after some heavier games have hit the table. It takes less than 5 minutes to teach and, in my experience, you rarely only play one game once it gets going.

What aroused my curiosity is these awards are usually reserved for some games with serious clout. The Mind didn’t read like this at all. It’s a small box co-operative card game that takes around 20 minutes to play. Some people question whether it is even a game! What is going on? Well, the good news is you can read my review to find out… GameplayTake the following common situation: you’re slowly nudging a card towards the center when out of the corner of your eye, you spot one of your mates parroting you. As you both approach the terminus of open table space, a decision must be made. One of you must play your card first. You sit there a moment in indecision, staring each other in the eyes with a sense of intensity. Your brow furrows and that vein above your eyebrow comes to life. Then you go for it. I love this type of “get in sync” teamwork. It’s a really great feeling when your team is able to successfully play two or three consecutive numbers. As long as players do not reveal the cards that they have is the main communication rule to follow, doing this would ruin the game. Alternatives to The Mind Card Game

Important: each player must always play the lowest card they are holding. For example, if Tim has the 21, 56 and 93 in his hand, he must play the 21 first. Have you ever wished you could read someone’s mind? Or telepathically communicate with them? You’ll feel like you can do both within the confines of The Mind, a brilliant little card game from Wolfgang Warsch and Pandasaurus Games. The cards included may be confusing at first as the Mind rules are certainly unique, but gameplay will start to make sense as you learn how to play it. Starting the GameSeems simple, but the catch is that players cannot communicate with each other in any way. No twitches, no secret signals, no communication. Players must focus and synchronise their thinking to determine the right time to play a card. As the game progress and advances to higher levels, players become more harmonised and the right time becomes easier to determine. At least, that’s the way the game is described. Originally published by Nürnberger-Spielkarten-Verlag, The Mind has now been brought to North America by Pandasaurus Games. It was nominated for the prestigious Spiel des Jahres award (though it was beaten by Azul) and has started a groundswell of both praise and consternation. How can such a simple game generate so much attention? Cult of The Mind Sarah plays the 34. Tim and Linus shout "stop". Tim has the 26 in his hand, Linus has the 30. One life is discarded. Tim places his 26 to one side, and Linus does the same with his 30. The team refocuses their concentration and the game continues.
