Together, these set the standard for conservation translocations and guide best practice. Sixteen beavers from Norway were released at Knapdale during the trial in five family groupings. The original Knapdale trial objectives included studying beaver ecology and biology, assessing their environmental, social and economic impacts and exploring educational opportunities. McDowell, D. M.; Naiman, R. J. (1986). "Structure and function of a benthic invertebrate stream community as influenced by beaver ( Castor canadensis)". Oecologia. 68 (4): 481–489. Bibcode: 1986Oecol..68..481M. doi: 10.1007/BF00378759. JSTOR 4217870. PMID 28311700. S2CID 24369386. In Belarus, a former Soviet republic between Russia and Poland, the beaver population has tripled in the past decade to an estimated 80,000, according to wildlife experts. That has caused beavers increasingly to encroach on populated areas.

If the dam material causes a flood risk, you should remove it to the bank away from the water to reduce the risk, if possible. Remove inactive burrows without a licence Beavers mark their territories by constructing scent mounds made of mud and vegetation, scented with castoreum. [101] Those with many territorial neighbors create more scent mounds. Scent marking increases in spring, during the dispersal of yearlings, to deter interlopers. [102] Beavers are generally intolerant of intruders and fights may result in deep bites to the sides, rump, and tail. [31] They exhibit a behavior known as the " dear enemy effect"; a territory-holder will investigate and become familiar with the scents of its neighbors and react more aggressively to the scents of strangers passing by. [103] Beavers are also more tolerant of individuals that are their kin. They recognize them by using their keen sense of smell to detect differences in the composition of anal gland secretions. Anal gland secretion profiles are more similar among relatives than unrelated individuals. [104] [105] Communication Logs incinerated through the activation of an infernal axe still trigger a roll for the beaver pet. [17]If only part of the roof has collapsed, beavers could still be using other chambers in the burrow. Beavers may repair a partial collapse. The IUCN Red List of mammals lists both beaver species as least concern. [40] [41] The North American beaver is widespread throughout most of the United States and Canada and can be found in northern Mexico. The species was introduced to Finland in 1937 (and then spread to northwestern Russia) and to Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, in 1946. [40] As of 2019 [update], the introduced population of North American beavers in Finland has been moving closer to the habitat of the Eurasian beaver. [42] Historically, the North American beaver was trapped and nearly extirpated because its fur was highly sought after. Protections have allowed the beaver population on the continent to rebound to an estimated 6–12 million by the late 20th century; still far lower than the originally estimated 60–400 million North American beavers before the fur trade. [43] The introduced population in Tierra del Fuego is estimated at 35,000–50,000 individuals as of 2016 [update]. [40] Finally, in February 2019, the Scottish Government confirmed the necessary legal steps would be taken to secure legal protection for beavers in Scotland. That protection came into effect on 1 May 2019. It means that beavers can only be killed when damage is proven and there is no other management alternative available. You will need to monitor the water levels if a dam supports the channel you need to infill. How to fill in channels AboutBeavers are Britain’s largest rodent, the group of mammals that includes rats, mice, and voles. They live in freshwater habitats, like rivers and streams, and prefer areas surrounded by wetland plants, trees and woodland. They are rather slow on land but excellent swimmers, so they feel safest when they’re close to deep water (around 70cm deep). If the water isn’t deep enough for them, beavers can make it deeper. They use mud, wood, and stones to build dams across shallow rivers, streams and ditches. The dams are leaky and let some water through, but slow down the flow enough for ponds to form, where the beavers can live and feel secure.

Habitats

You should infill and protect the channel from further beaver activity, and make sure the infill material does not wash into the river or waterway. Three discrete western European populations survived – in southern Norway, on the Elbe in Germany, and the Rhone in France. Gradually there were signs that beavers were starting to recover across mainland Europe from these relict populations.
