Chronicles of Ancient Darkness is a series of historical fantasy novels by the British author Michelle Paver; her first books for children. [1] The books chronicle the adventures of Torak, an adolescent boy, and his friends Renn and Wolf. The main story arc revolves around Torak and his quest to defeat the Soul Eaters, a group of power hungry mages who seek out to destroy all life in the forest. Paver has called it simply "a single story: the tale of Torak's discovery of himself and his world." [1] The books are set 6000 years ago in prehistoric Europe during the Stone Age. The main character, Torak, alone in the world, meets a lone, scared wolf cub, Wolf with whom he can communicate (having spent around three months in a wolf den as a baby). A girl named Renn, who is part of the Raven Clan, befriends them and supports them throughout the series. Torak's quest, along with Renn and Wolf, is to defeat the Soul Eaters, a group of former clan mages who have turned to evil, and who seek to control the forest. Torak and Wolf, aided by Naiginn's father, Marupai and a young halfman (girl) named Shamik from the Narwhal clan, trace Naiginn and Renn to the Edge of the World, a volcanic opening where an opening to the demonic Otherworld can be found. Naiginn wants to use the power of the Edge of the World to allow Renn to break his curse, but the proximity of flames (counter to Naiginn's nature as an ice demon) weaken him. Renn escapes and Wolf summons the ancient spirits of the long-dead mammoths to hunt the demons, who fear them. Naiginn disappears and Torak, Renn, Wolf and Shamik (eager to escape the abuse she suffers from the Narwhals) return to the Forest. However, although they promise to tell each other the truth from that moment onwards, Renn does not tell Torak that she is still seeing visions of Seshru. Before they get to the Mountain of the World Spirit, the trio must locate the three pieces of the Nanuak; objects the World Spirit has imbued with power. The Nanuak pieces are found in a river, a cave, and in the hand of a dead man. During a "Michelle Live" live stream on YouTube and twitch on 30 March 2020, Paver herself revealed that she has just completed a deal with Kindle Entertainment and Lionsgate and that a live action TV series will be made based on the series. Paver said "I've had more meetings with producers about Wolf Brother than I can remember but Anne Brogan and Melanie Stokes from Kindle Entertainment stood out from the very first time I met them. They knew the series inside out and – a big plus for me – their children were fans. Wolf Brother fans have extremely high expectations for a television series and Anne and Mel share the same burning desire to create a legendary series. I'm entrusting them with the lives of Torak, Renn and Wolf! I know they will be in safe hands." In the Deep Forest, Torak and Renn come across the Red Deer Clan, who have become a shell of their former self and believe the Thunderstar was a sign of the World Spirit's displeasure with them. Those Clans whose lands had been spared by the Thunderstar had abandoned their ways and, calling themselves the 'Chosen Ones', followed a new leader who defended them against a new threat which had emerged in the wake of the disaster: Skin Takers. The Skin Takers, announcing their arrival with piercing cries, steal the death marks from the dead, and eat the brains of the dead. As they hear tales of the Skin Takers, Renn shares with Torak her suspicion that Naiginn had survived their confrontation in the Far North and is responsible for the turmoil in the Deep Forest. Soon, both are separately captured by the Chosen Ones and, while Renn manages to escape with help from a sceptic hunter, Torak is brought to the Leader, who reveals himself to be Naiginn. The ice demon reveals that, in addition to surviving their battle on the Edge of the World, he had discovered his mother had lied to him about his curse: he could free his demon nature from his mortal body by consuming souls, specifically the brains of still living beings. Naiginn had created the myth of the Skin Takers, faking their cries and convincing the Chosen Ones and the subdued Deep Forest Clans that only he could defeat them. Torak manages to escape from Naiginn when Renn and Wolf send the sacred horses towards him and, much as he had during the events of Oathbreaker, he rides one away. Reaching the Sacred Grove, Torak's spirit breaks when he discovers that the oldest trees in the Forest, the Great Yew and the Great Oak, have been destroyed by the Thunderstar.In 2019, Paver announced that she would be returning to the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness with three further books, set after the end of the main series, once again following Torak, Renn and Wolf. The titles of the books were announced as: Viper's Daughter, Skin Taker and Wolfbane. Renn is a fierce Raven Clan member and one of the main characters of the book series. She is an excellent hunter, skillful with many weapons but her favourite is the bow. She takes care of her bow and it was her "friend" until she met Torak, since it is mentioned that Torak was the "first real friend she ever had", as the rest of the clan fear her for her mage powers. However, in Oath Breaker, Thiazzi snaps her bow, and she takes this as a sign that Fin-Kedinn, who was injured, is dead; however, he is not. She and Torak seem to have some sort of relationship, and in Ghost Hunter it is mentioned that Renn's uncle Fin-Kedinn tries to keep Renn and Torak apart and that Torak is now fifteen years old, so he is permitted to choose a mate, which hints at Renn and Torak's relationship. While chasing Eostra, Renn was injured so Torak decided to continue without her. At the end of the book, Renn decides to leave the Clans with Torak, Wolf, Darkfur and Pebble with her uncle's blessing. Before hand, Torak kisses Renn on the mouth. It is also said that Renn kisses Torak's jaw at the end of Oath Breaker. This also hints at their relationship. She's very clever and detailed with her craftsmanship Skin Taker is another sequel to the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series. I would recommend this book for ages 12+

The book has been translated into Chinese, Spanish, French, Czech, Slovak, Polish, Vietnamese, Bulgarian, Japanese, German, Dutch, Swedish, Portuguese, Italian, Hebrew, Finnish, Norwegian, Russian, Serbian, Hungarian, Latvian, Danish, Indonesian, Romanian, Icelandic, Turkish, Slovenian and Faroese ( Faroe Islands). Only the stony faced eagle owl mage remains. She holds the clans in a grip of terror, forcing Torak, Renn and Wolf out of the forest. They must venture to her lair in the Mountain of Ghosts to fight the final battle.Wolfbane is coming out on the 26th of April 2022. I am looking forward to reading the last book of the series! Torak runs away from the Ravens in this book to find the cure for a mysterious illness befalling the Clans, and He wins by temporarily blinding Hord with steam; this action, together with a dog whistle which Torak has made to summon Wolf, leads Fin-Kedinn and the Raven mage to see Torak as the "Listener" of a prophecy. The prophecy states that the Listener, who "talks with silence and fights with air", will offer his heart's blood to the World Spirit and thereby kill the demon-bear. Many Ravens now believe that Torak must be sacrificed. Torak manages to escape his imprisonment; he is unexpectedly joined by Renn, who has also brought Wolf. Though adversarial at first, Torak and Renn develop a mutual respect, and eventually become friends. Hord is Renn's brother. He unknowingly helps Tenris, who's acting as a 'crippled wanderer' create a demon by capturing a young bear. Throughout the first book Hord behaves stubbornly, and fueled by guilt, believes that he must deliver Torak's blood to the World Spirit himself. In the end, he follows Torak to the Mountain of the World Spirit and tries to kill him, he fails and he and the bear are killed by an avalanche created by the World Spirit.

Chronicles of Ancient Darkness Omnibus 1: Books 1-3

The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness is a six book series, with three sequel books. Wolfbane (the final book) is coming out this year. It is set 6,000 years ago in the Stone Age and follows the adventures of Torak, Renn and Wolf. I would recommend the first few books in this series for ages 9+ however the last three books may suit ages 11+ better. I really enjoyed these books because of the interesting themes and fast pace of each book, which keeps you engaged throughout. Torak has been rejected by the clans after they discover his horrifying secret. He bears the mark of an outcast. The Raven clan, boar clan and a vicious viper all want him dead. Little does he know that the snake is lurking nearby, ready to kill…Soul eater is the third book in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series. In this book we discover the evil Soul Eaters, characters that haven’t been presented much in the two previous books. I loved this book because of the gripping adventure, and my favourite part is when Renn and Torak are in the far North. I would recommend this book for ages 10+.
