It's still a funny book with great characters and magic - also, I did read it within a couple of hours, so I definitely didn't hate it. So: I've read the first Skulduggery Pleasant book when I was 12 and have read every book in the series published so far. If the plot of the last 100 pages or so made any sense to anyone, feel free to explain, because I didn't get it.Moments of the wry and witty that I love so much, but so many characters with brief moments in an enormous and complex world that I got a bit lost. I like how they all handled and adapted to the situation but just the fact that Valkyrie was there felt a bit forced to me. One thing that threw me off completely about this book is that it is described as being a prequel novel and in the marketing it said it can be read as a standalone, and that I’d heavily disagree with.

You will not get anything of substance out of this if you’re not familiar with at least a book or two from the original series, but even then this book felt lacking to me. This one definitely kept me guessing, and while my theories didn't pan out, this was still a really, really fun book to read, and has possibly added to what was set up in the Grimoire and Until The End, which could may be the start of a new Skulduggery run! For too long, the Irish Sanctuary has teetered on the brink of world-ending disaster, and the other Sanctuaries around the world have had enough. Something for everyone and everything for someone, Skulduggery Pleasant is easily my book of the year so far.

I will say it did make me want to go back into that world and pick up where I paused reading them though, if that’s any consolation. As I said earlier, I don't hate HBL at all, it is a million miles ahead of the Grimoire and so that is pretty much all it needs.
