There are strong direct drive offerings from Fanatec, SimuCube and others. The best overall direct drive racing wheel is the Fanatec DD1. It combines extreme performance, wide compatibility at a reasonable price range. However, there may be better suited direct drive wheel bases for your needs.The load cell which is directly integrated into the brake pedal produces one of the most realistic braking simulations you can get from a racing sim pedal. You can apply realistic brake pressure just like in a real car, with the pressure depending on how hard you press the pedal. Just looking at the Fanatec CSL Elite, you can tell it’s made by nerdy obsessives. After all, who else would choose that funky grey disco ball effect on the base? Not all will love the look, but at least it’s not super-shiny. In terms of installation, the aluminium adapter ring included with the module facilitates mounting to wheel rims, ensuring a secure fit without introducing flex or play in the steering system. The module’s connectivity is versatile, supporting integration with various Fanatec Hubs through the DataPort-C connector. Having returned the Fanatec gear I upgraded the TX458 wheel and added the 599XX 30cm wheel (big improvement imo), T3PA pedals and TH8A shifter. I'm on my second TX458 servo base (first one lasted 4 years and many many virtual miles and I feel I had my money's worth from it, friends have experienced much the same pattern after 4-5 years of use). I've been completely happy with the Thrustmaster gear for this console generation. It's also good that Microsoft has confirmed all peripherals will work with the next Xbox too as that was an expensive reset last time. While it’s not something I’ve ever used, the Moza Racing R9 does have wireless app control where you're able to make changes to the performance of your wheelbase in the Moza app rather than having to pull up their software on your PC. This is a cool quirk of the R9 that Fanatec doesn’t have.
To conclude this comparison, both MOZA Racing and Fanatec offer similar products, at similar price ranges. Fanatec does have the edge thanks to their experience, and a much wider ecosystem. In this comparison alone, Fanatec wheels do represent decent value, considering MOZA’s wheels are priced very similarly. This gives you multiple options to combine hardware of different vendors the way you want. Most simulation games on Windows PCs will allow you to use combinations like: Logitech wheel, Thrustmaster shifter and Fanatec pedals for example. Since Fanatec provides USB solutions for more or less every kind of hardware (shifter/handbrake by USB adapter, USB pedals, USB wheels, etc.) the possibilities to build your perfect setup are endless.You may be new to sim racing or looking for a few upgrades to improve your experience. Thrustmaster have a range of wheel bases with slight variation between console. For example, if you are looking for an Xbox compatible wheel base you will want to go for the Thrustmaster T300 RS. Whereas if you wanted a PS4 wheel base you have the Thrustmaster TX. Both of these products are relatively similar in most aspects. Thrustmaster have done this to cater for each console’s own architecture. Fanatec ecosystem compatibility: Fully compatible with Fanatec’s range of steering wheels, pedals, shifters, and handbrakes Podium Wheel Base DD1 There are good bits, sure, particularly the lower price. However, the Hori Apex (and the Hori Overdrive) is easily the most toy-like wheel in this group. It has plastic gear shifters, fairly cheap plastic pedals and no parts to upgrade. It also has very limited rotation compared with all the other wheels here, turning just 270 degrees rather than 900 or 1080. This resulted in me being able to push my car harder with the CSL Elite compared to the TX. And in turn, an ever so slight improvement to lap times.With the introduction of much lower-powered and cheaper direct drive wheels throughout 2021 and 2022, console compatibility has also been expanded. Both the CSL DD and GT DD Pro create 5Nm in their base form. However, both come with an optional Boost Kit which increases this strength to 8Nm.
