About this deal

This book was pretty cute at first for sure, but while I don't need a plot to keep me interested in a good set of characters, I do need *something*. the book can’t decide whether it’s cosy or high-stakes, and though i was intrigued by the premise of a vengeful queen she wasn’t actually present much. This story is also slightly more tense, and we get a possible mystery involving dragon eggs which makes for far reaching consequences, which I’m sure will come to fruition in the rest of the series. The similarities in the vibes are very strong but the author still manages to give the feel of a very different world, slightly darker in tone, lots of tasty tea - but ofcourse the delicious baked goods still remain and I totally couldn’t have done without them. and you just invent the concept of libraries in a single conversation (also, does the magic school NOT have libraries already?

We can have high stakes, all the makings and adventure of a traditional high fantasy, and still be cozy.

Also, there were some words that stood out to me in the quesi-historical fantasy setting, such as referring to a vest top as a 'tank' or repeated use of the word 'vacation. I found the relationship to be frustrating and more often than not felt like I was being told things, not shown things. so to sum it all up: definitely not a cozy fantasy, the non-cozy plot doesn't even go anywhere in the nearly 400 pages, the characters are boring, and the worldbuilding is lazy (all in my opinion, of course). Although I wish Gossley had been developed a bit more for having a purpose beyond, seemingly, only existing to make Reyna look like a better and more empathetic person, I enjoyed the dynamic between him and Reyna nonetheless in between Kianthe and Reyna's never-ending banter. p., editorial director for Tor US’s Bramble imprint, bought US rights from Taryn Fagerness at the Taryn Fagerness Agency.Thing is, Reyna works as one of the Queen’s private guards, and Kianthe is the most powerful mage in existence. I really liked the premise, but think the book suffered from a lack of identity, wavering between "cozy " and high-stakes fantasy. It often felt like it wasn't sure whether it wanted to be a cozy story or a more high stakes adventure, which lead to some slightly off-pacing in places. Tor has scooped Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea plus three other "cosy" fantasy books by Rebecca Thorne.
