About this deal

The Flymo has 6 height adjustments (compared to only 4 on the Bosch) and there is a single height adjustment lever on the back wheels of the Flymo. If you cut the lawn short then the settings on the front wheels come into play and then you can rake or scarify right down to setting number 1 and even leave grooves in the ground to re-seed. With the machine the job is done better, no more sweat, pain to the arms and shoulders and the job is completed in just a fraction of the time. Then subscribe to our newsletter, which has plenty of tips and tricks for keeping things exciting around your home and garden!

Next stage was to identify the really bare areas, drop the machine down to setting 1 or 2 and then run again. The 50 litre collection box (which is large for an electric model) does fill quickly but, even so, it is an appropriate size for this machine which is quite light and relatively maneuverable. Although relatively expensive this seems to be a well designed and very efficient piece of equipment. The Jet Collect system is clearly a feature that makes a real difference to the job in hand, the collection box capacity is increased and the ability to collect the debris is improved – Great job Bosch! Only used the machine once since I received it, because it took so much dead moss and thatch out of my back lawn I have completely filled up my Green wheelie bin!Update July 2012 - the machine is still going strong but I have just replaced the tines (prongs) for the first time and it is raking out moss just like new. But, if it's scarification you want, be prepared to scarify every time you cut your lawn (according to the experts). After two weeks the lawn seed is still seed but the remaining lawn is better than the other lawns which were in a similar state. Both are very useful for clearing moss, thatch, leaves and other debris however the Bosch AVR 1100 Verticutter can also be used to give a much more deeper clearing of your lawn because the blades slice through the surface to lift rooted growth and debris.

Press the lever for the operating height and move it forward or backward to adjust the desired working height.

It is worth using twine to mark each run if you want to maximise your effort and get a consistent finish - one setting of the twine and then do a pass and reverse and then change the twice for the next two passes. Further information and for reference: I used a moss killer (bulk purchase form a popular auction web site) a week before the scarifier, cut the lawn short before and treated the grass with lawn feed (from the same place as the moss killer) and lawn seed (yep, same place) after scarification. Of course this is open to interpretation so if you don’t fall under every single one then don’t worry I’m sure you’ll still love this product. While they share some similarities, there are also some key differences between the two models that are worth considering before making a purchase. well, yes I think it does for people with smaller lawns and limited space for storage with the ability to get the job done without emptying the collection box as often.

Just make sure you don’t set it at the shortest setting from the start when the lawn has significant growth, instead start at a much higher setting and gradually work your way down. This is a safety feature that just makes sure that children or pets don’t accidentally start the machine. For a 300m2 you could also consider the more powerful VonHaus 2 in 1 Lawn Scarifier (1800 W model) as this allows you to switch drums between tines or blades. When wanting to change direction with the lawnraker, tip it slightly backward to raise the tines from the floor then turn to face the direction you want to go.
