About this deal

The opening. Strong character stuff and an excellent display of Cargill's ability to transport you. Unlike the exposition dump chapters I'll delve into later, the worldbuilding is immediate and apparent in a way that doesn't call attention to itself too much and feels organic.

Sea of Rust Series by C. Robert Cargill - Goodreads

Always glad to hear that! Yeah, that cover looks quite retro in the design of the robots, which threw me at first! A tasty, if not always tasteful, tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy. Like a mecha Mad Max, Sea of Rust follows a band of misfits fighting to survive against a scorched, barren landscape. Drawing on Western and war movie traditions, with a philosophical heart that asks big questions about life, death, and the soul, this is accomplished, technically complex scifi. The Supporting Characters. They are well-realized for the most part and Cargill does enough to make each character stand out. Dialogue aside, good as it is, each character, how they act, react, and look at the world, especially compared to Brittle, is well done. I in particular liked Murka and his random comments about Commies and the Gipper. Cargill is an interesting guy. In addition to the Sea of Rust books he’s written two fantasy novels, Dreams and Shadows and its sequel Queen of the Dark Things. But his big claim to fame is as a screenwriter, for Marvel’s Dr. Strange, and one of the best (and most disturbing) horror films of the last decade Sinister (2012), and its sequel Sinister II (2015). The original concept came from a nightmare after seeing The Ring, consisting of him going up to his attic and finding a box of super 8 films. [2] [22] People gave us a purpose. Something to do all day, every day. At the end, I suppose, you spend a lot of time thinking about that. It's harder to get by when getting by is all there is.” You see, not all robots are willing to cede their individuality – their personality – for the sake of a greater, stronger, higher power. Not even the OWIs themselves, who contend with each other in a constant war of attrition to reign supreme. The smaller individuals, like Brittle, are outcasts, wandering the wastes and underground outposts in the search of parts and companionship, while keeping an eye out for the ever hungry OWIs.

a b c Grobler, Craig (2012-10-22). "Writer C. Robert Cargill gets Sinister with us whilst chatting about his love of film..." The Establishing Shot . Retrieved 2013-06-23. I waited for the green again. That scant little flash of green as the sun winks out behind the horizon. That’s where the magic was. In the flash. That’s what she said. That’s what she always said.” Cargill ( Queen of the Dark Things, 2014, etc.) takes readers to Earth's post-human future in which robots struggle to survive and remain free of their own robot overlords. The main reason that robots haven't all synced up to make a better world is that before the dust had settled, "OWIs" were rising. One World Intelligences are basically supercomputers who turn other robots into "facets" of themselves, basically a single node in their vast networked intelligence. A robot who joins an OWI becomes simultaneously part of a superintelligence, and ceases to exist as anything but a drone. The first OWIs recruited robots to their cause to more effectively fight humanity. Once humans were gone, the OWIs turned on each other, and all free bots. In case you want yet another beta reader's opinion, I'm glad to offer my service. Especially since this gives me the possibility to read AQATWW earlier. ;-) I really enjoyed this one, I read it when it was shortlisted for the Clarke and I enjoyed the themes discussed in the book. Brittle is also a great character even if she is maybe a bit too “human-like” for a robot. 😛 Great review!
