a b Christgau, Robert (26 February 1970). "Consumer Guide". The Village Voice . Retrieved 6 January 2017. This pressing plays and sounds fantastic. It is clear, vibrant, quiet and spacious. Get it while you can! Chrisley, Neil (5 June 2013). "Joe Satriani on His Five Essential Albums". Gibson.com. Gibson Guitar Corporation . Retrieved 3 November 2015. It begins with a tramp sitting on a park bench ‘watching as the frilly panties run’ and ends with a meditation on the nature of God – Tull in a nutshell, really. Aqualung is high on ambition and sardonic rage. The first half introduces Aqualung the tramp, ‘eying little girls with bad intent’ and Cross-Eyed Mary, the good-time girl who ‘will do it for a song’. Both are archetypes that Anderson would return to again and again. Now comes Analogue Productions’ 180-gram double 45 RPM reissue sourced from the original Island master tapes sent over from the U.K.

The recording sessions for this album started in April ’69. One month later, the band scored their first U.K. hit with “Living In The Past,” which charted at #3 (included in the remastered release).. Starting with “Stand Up,” the band’s use of dynamics, Celtic Folk, and classically-oriented tonal structures, along with Ian Anderson’s flute playing and songwriting, became Jethro Tull’s signature. Simply put, “Stand Up” was the genesis of Tull’s sound and, not surprisingly, is one of Anderson’s favorite Tull records. However, if you do not have the box in hand already, you will have to spend hundreds of dollars to obtain one on the secondary market. It is the sad reality of being a Jethro Tull fan in this era of corporate greed and indifference from Ian Anderson. Don't worry, you can still get box sets of disappointing later Tull efforts like A and Stormwatch for a reasonable price.

On their second album, Jethro Tull draws inspiration from a wide spectrum of genres, ranging from classical, to blues, folk, and even Indian music. And yet, despite the sharp contrast between these influences, the album always never comes across as disorganized or disjointed-a fine achievement. The Stand Up Elevated Edition is a great sounding box set that features what some, including myself, feel is Tull's best album. Having listened to some of the other Tull “book” editions, I feel that Stand Up is better than anything else they ever released, including Aqualung. It’s a shame they could never match the quality of Stand Up.

Jethro Tull – A Passion Play: An Extended Performances (1973) [2014, Deluxe Set, 2CD + 2DVD + Hi-Res] In 1989 a MFSL remaster was released, with catalogue number UDCD 524. The booklet featured the pop-up woodcut band. The 1969 Rolling Stone review was quite positive, stating that the album "has a fairly low raunch quotient, true to form, but it is quite marvellous" and also that "the album is not really funky; rather, it is a meticulously crafted work (no sterility implied) which deserves careful listening. At a time when many of the established stars are faltering, it is a particular pleasure to hear an important new voice." [17] The contemporary Disc and Music Echo review was less favourable; it considered the expensive cover the "most impressive" part of the album and Jethro Tull a good live band but still incapable of producing a "musically interesting" release. [21] American critic Robert Christgau reiterated his dislike of the band, but judged the album "adequate" in his Village Voice review. Clean, balanced, richly detailed. Just the way an Analogue Productions reissue should sound. You'll experience Jethro Tull classics such as "Bouree," "A New Day Yesterday," "Look Into The Sun," "We Used To Know," "Fat Man" and the rest with a new appreciation for the Grammy-winning progressive act's musical skill and innovation.Stand Up! has great textural interest, due, in part, to a more sophisticated recording technique, in part to the organ, mandolin, balalaika, etc., which Anderson plays to enrich each song. The band is able to work with different musical styles, but without a trace of the facile, glib manipulation which strains for attention. I can hear ethnic influences throughout the album — a hint of Greek rhythms on the flute break of “We Used to Know” and in the body of “Four Thousand Mothers”— but they are too well assimilated to be easily pinpointed. “Bourree” has that unmistakable baroque swing, a suggestion of the traditional English round, some jazz interludes, and a straight-forward yet breathtaking bass solo before, it winds its way to completion. “Jeffrey Goes to Leicester Square” has a sense of the vague, charming disorganization of medieval music. “Look into the Sun,” which finishes side one, is in its melodic twists and turns, a song of genuine poignance, with Martin Barre’s guitar playing a model of lyricism and understatement.

Clarity, transparency, high frequency extension and especially transient precision are all far superior to the original. It was in 1992 that Acoustic Sounds owner Chad Kassem reissued his first Analogue Productions title, Virgil Thompson's The Plow That Broke The Plains, originally on Vanguard.
