About this deal

Trauma i strah od nepoznatog na Asanovim stranicama imaju prizvuk nostalgije jer izazivaju emocije kroz koje smo svi makar na minut prošli u svom odrastanju. While we are only specks in the known universe, the one thing we can do for ourselves is give our lives a purpose. A poignant reminder that I, along with everyone else in the world, could be exactly like Punpun at our lowest point in life. It’s a manga that I recommend more than others to any audience out there, since this is a story that has to be read and experienced.

I liked Yuichi, but then the author had to go and ruin him by making him a perverted fuck who stares at girls asses. It's a shame that the B-plot with Pegasus is so hard to follow, since it really brings down the second half a bit. The characters are all very unique looking from each other in the way they designed from their faces to body types, and everyone is incredibly expressive in their body language; especially the oddball adults (like the teacher who throws a huge fit at one point). You have Punpun’s parents, a dad who loves his son a lot but appears to have a messy and destructive attitude and a mom who feels very negligent and almost uncaring towards a lot of aspects in Punpun’s life.He has a group of friends he hangs out with, has some big dreams, is getting more curious about the world (wants to find some porn as well), and there’s a girl he’s crushing on. I was a fan of Inio Asano's Solanin, a story about twenty-somethings looking for identity, but did not like Nijigahara Holograph, a work of surreal psychological horror that I never connected to.

Such a depiction of the decay of the traditional family structures makes this work particularly complex and deep, with plenty of things to be read between the lines. Punpun and the members of his family are normal humans, but are depicted to the reader in the form of crudely drawn birds. It also really goes into depth about other characters point of views which makes the whole synopsis even more interesting. punpun’s depiction of self pity and hopelessness really hurt me, it felt shameful relating to him in that sense, though it could be worse. Aiko Tanaka transfers into Punpun Punyama's elementary school class and they come to like each other. The difficult part of this book is pondering whether or not you feel bad for him, thus forcing you to think about the choices you've made in your own life, the people you surround yourself with.
