About this deal

On the three main factors considered in the Poore and Nemecek study, soya milk has the lowest overall impact. Most notably it uses a fraction of the water of the global cow’s milk industry – over 22 times less and 11 times less than European cow's milk. Another one you might have dismissed! Newer to the scene, and as some of us here at The Vegan Society have found, it can be hard to convince people of the wonders of pea milk. We think it has the potential to be another versatile classic like soya milk. Look, all we are saying is give peas a chance! Dip your toes in (not literally) with Wunda Plant Based Not Milk in Original and Unsweetened, powered by protein from yellow split peas. They’re both gluten-free and low in salt and fat, with Wunda Original being low in sugar and Wunda Unsweetened being sugar-free. Rice milk scores very well for land use but is the highest, after dairy milk, for carbon emissions. This is because rice farmers often flood rice fields which breeds bacteria in the soil leading to methane production. It also means water use can be very high.People are unlikely to allergic to potatoes but Dug also contains pea protein which some people can be allergic to.

Not only is plant milk better for the animals and you, but research suggests it is also more sustainable than cow’s milk. Compared to non-dairy milks, producing a glass of cow’s milk results in nearly three times more greenhouse gas emissions, according to a University of Oxford study, as well as significantly more land use. Cow’s milk is a source of iodine and if you’re thinking of ditching dairy, you may be worried about getting enough. Fear not! Iodine fortification of milk and yoghurt alternatives is becoming more common. ASDA’s Vegan Trademarked soya, oat, almond, coconut and hazelnut milks are all fortified with iodine. But please note, you will need to consume around 500ml of iodine-fortified plant milk daily to get enough of this essential nutrient. Alternatively, The Vegan Society’s multivitamin VEG 1 has you covered! Great for vegans and non-vegans alike, it contains 150µg which is 100% of your daily recommended iodine along with other essential vitamins and minerals like B12, D3 and selenium. With seven essential nutrients rolled into one chewable tablet, VEG 1 is the hassle-free way to ensure that your nutritional needs are being met. The unsweetened version contains 3g of fat per 100g which is double the sweetened version but only a tiny amount (0.2g) is saturated. It may be that you are lactose intolerant or sensitive to dairy products and you might be looking for substitutes which don’t upset your digestive system. You may therefore wish to consider lactose-free milk. Oat milk is the most popular plant-based milk alternative in the UK and is known for being particularly good in coffee.

The company, owned by Coca Cola, noted poor sales figures as one of the key drivers behind the decision. A 2016 systematic review and meta analysis found oat beta gluten could have a lowering effect on ‘bad’ cholesterol and could be a tool in reducing cardiovascular disease. The company said: “We’re sad to say that our dairy-free range will be leaving shelves in the next few weeks.

People are often confused about whether oats and oat milk are gluten-free. Oats are naturally gluten-free but the way they are processed to make oat milk means they often contain traces of gluten and so can't be regarded as truly gluten-free. I loved rice drink as a child and still do now. The rice imparts a surprisingly delicious and sweet rounded flavour. I like to drink it cold straight from the glass, but it also works well in smoothies and baking because of its relatively subtle flavour. It doesn’t work so well in coffee. Rude Health are the only company making a rice drink with wholegrain brown rice. As a wholefood chef I believe in the benefits of a wholefood diet including added flavour. Alpro Soya ★★★☆☆We have made the decision to stop our dairy alternatives range from April 2023 to focus on our best selling fruit and veg juices and smoothies. This drink has an intense and delicious flavour of roasted hazelnuts. It contains a high percentage of hazelnuts and just three other ingredients – rice, spring water and sea salt. I liked this drink so much, somehow I managed to drink the whole bottle during the tasting. Because of its strong flavour it can only be used in drinks or cooking when you want it to taste of hazelnuts. Use this to your advantage to make an insanely yummy hazelnut hot chocolate. Oatly barista ★★★★☆ Summary: While coconuts aren’t land and water intensive, they can only be grown in tropical environments which can lead to other environmental detriment. Is coconut milk good for you? This plant-based milk is made mainly from almonds and as you would expect, has a wonderful creamy texture and slightly nutty flavour.

Summary: A really good sustainable option, especially when the yellow split peas are grown closer to home. Is pea milk good for you? Summary: Environmentally, it’s not always the best choice. Choosing organic may limit the damage to bees caused by pesticides (but will then not be fortified). Is almond milk good for you? If you have been diagnosed with a lactose intolerance, then eating or drinking dairy products can result in digestive issues such as diarrhoea, gas and bloating, which can make you feel pretty uncomfortable. For many people, it can be best to avoid dairy altogether. I’m a fan of oats and now prefer it to cow’s milk, both as a drink and in my coffee. Originally, I chose to drink plant milks for animal welfare and environmental reasons, but now I prefer the taste too. Oatly Barista Edition has a super-creamy texture and froths really well. I like the subtle but rounded oat flavour too. Rude Health Brown Rice ★★★★☆ But if You are looking for something a little more traditional, there are plenty of other mousse recipes and ‘moussey’ puddings out there to drool over… You could try these for starters :Plant milks labelled as organic can't be fortified, so if you want to make sure your plant milk is a source of calcium and other vitamins and minerals, you'll need to go for the non-organic versions.
