There is no need to wait a long time once Wireless CarPlay or Android Auto boots onto your car's infotainment system. I am using it everyday but oddly enough I've to unplug it when charging otherwise my phone in the house drops the house WiFi and keeps connecting to the dongle. I get in the car and it just works, no plugging in, and I can just keep the phone in my pocket if i want. You only need to plug the dongle into the USB port and connect your phone to the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signals.
I was going to try to change some settings as Carlinkit advise a couple of changes for connection issues. The other slight annoyance, and along the lines of your powered USB when charging, is that when I connect to the car via the Bluelink app the USB ports become active as the adapter keeps trying to connect to my phone (when i'm in range at least). With the faffing around you might think that just using the lead is better and in some cases it probably is. The device itself isn't inherently illegal but you could be breaking a law if you're distracted while driving, and that goes for any reason.I've set Android Auto to wireless (its an option in my AA settings) so I don't have to do anything to initiate wireless AA, and in my case, Google Maps starts with satellite view and Spotify starts streaming my playlist.
