About this deal

The plot was superb although not exactly original, once you were introduced to the moving parts it was obvious who the counterfeit candidate was and how they were linked to Box 1321.

Starting off as an apparent crime drama surrounding an audacious jewellery heist it soon develops into a remarkable political and historical conspiracy thriller.Flash forward to Buenos Aires in January 2012, and three men break into a bank's safety deposit boxes stealing as much as they can.

Also, you always have a new plethora of new characters show up for a few pages only to be discarded and forgotten as quickly as they show up, which leaves the reader wondering what was the point of introducing them at length if they have zero impact? No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. Senator John Franklin is set to become the next President of the United States and his father's deposit box is one of the ones in which the contents were stolen.Harris’ Fatherland is one of my all-time favourite thrillers and, like The Counterfeit Candidate, it paints an alternate version of history. Senator John Franklin, hailed as the ‘Great Unifier’, secures the Republican Presidential nomination and seems destined for the Oval Office. I like the idea of the author Brian Klein reading biographies of Hitler and thinking: that's not a man who would have committed suicide - then imagining what else might have happened. All them were cautious not to be seen by the six CCTV cameras so they all wore plastic monkey masks.

The bank heist, planned like a military operation for 8 months and perfectly executed was part of Pedro Garcia’s retirement plan, he was just looking for cash and money but was totally unaware of the contents of box 1321. There way too many sublplots (caused by too many sub-characters) that only serve to make the novel more convoluted and pointless (for example, why would Franklin senior keeps employing his mercenaries when all they do, time after time, is mess-up royally which results in their operation being exposed? We begin the story back in 1945 and the supposed suicide of Adolf Hitler and his new bride Eva Braun. He is a strong personality, who knows exactly what he wants and is also one of the funniest men I have ever met. The contemporary part of the story is set in January, 2012 and chaos breaks out, when a sensational safe deposit robbery, at a seemingly impregnable bank vault in Buenos Aires, ignites the possibility of exposing this incredible historical truth.
