About this deal

As with the rest of the titles in the recently released Nolan Ultra HD Blu-ray selection, Interstellar has reportedly been released under the supervision of the director himself, approving the 4K scan and colour timing.

Interstellar [2014] (4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray) – Warner Bros

Sitting before a 100-foot screen, though, you won’t give a toss about equations because Nolan’s starscape is the most mesmerising visual of the year. Interstellar is a science fiction epic from the point of view of a family, making it a thought-provoking sci-fi movie like Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and the film was originally conceived and developed by Steven Spielberg before Christopher Nolan became attached and made it his own. This is Nolan at his highest-functioning but also his least accessible; a film that eschews conflict for exploration, action for meditation and reflection. One possibility is that in the "original" timeline, humanity did in fact die out on Earth, but Brand's "Plan B" colony on Edmunds' planet survived, evolved, and eventually developed the ability to travel through time and change the past, creating a new timeline. Cooper has plenty of heroic qualities and does good things for the right reasons, but he clearly feels dissatisfied with just being a father and a farmer. This could mean that our very notions of cause and effect aren't even true, and that our belief that cause must predate effect is actually incorrect. The library exists to ensure that Cooper will be able to deliver his daughter the information she needs, right when she needs it. And it’s implied that the ultra-advanced civilisation are in fact humans from the future, who have mastered quantum mechanics to the extent where they exist in five dimensions – that is, they can move forwards and backwards in time and space with ease.

As Coop notes, “there’s not a planet in our solar system that can sustain life, and the nearest star is over a thousand years away”. But in Cooper we find a new man cut from old cloth: an all-American hero pulled straight from Philip Kaufman’s The Right Stuff. If you look past its flaws then you'll likely see that this truly is a visionary work of frequently opulent majesty. Note that the single film SKU of this 4K Ultra HD title also includes a Digital Copy code on a paper insert, but if you purchase the Christopher Nolan Collection in 4K, no Digital Copy is included – just the films in both 4K and BD with BD extras. While humans have the technology to launch individual shuttles, the city-sized space stations are another story, and sending them into space requires humans to learn to manipulate gravity according to their will.

Although we never learn exactly what year it is at the beginning of Interstellar, for the first half of the film, the timeline seems pretty straightforward. You see this in the blue and dust-filled skies of Earth, in the clouds of Saturn, in the rippling “surface” of the wormhole and the bulk as the Endurance passes through it, in the accretion disk of Gargantua, in the icy surface of Mann’s planet, and in countless other details in almost every frame. For all of its lofty sci-fi concepts and depictions of distant planets, Interstellar never loses sight of the simple human drama at its core.As Brand explained earlier in the film, love is the only thing that transcends all dimensions, including time and space. But despite Murph's warnings (and the fact that his son is really sick), Tom refuses to abandon the farmhouse where he and Murph grew up. The betrayal of a child abandoned is potent from the outset but the guilt is magnified tenfold when the Endurance’s first stop, within the influence of the black hole, means that a few hours stranded planet-side result in two decades passing back on Earth. Mann (Matt Damon), whose big words turn out to be little more than lies told to help them in avoiding harsh realities. After realizing why the library exists and that "they" want Cooper to give Murph the quantum data she needs to save the world, TARS asks how Cooper plans to communicate such complex information from another dimension.
