About this deal

The first bus is supposed to go at 8:30 AM and then another one every hour during the weekdays and every half an hour on weekends. When we went on Saturday, the first bus departed at 9 AM. There were still very few people, maybe that’s why. Everyone calls it the “tequila worm,” but here’s another thing that’s going to blow your mind. It’s not in tequila, and it’s not a worm. Gasp!

Others allege that this story is fiction. As modern tellings would have it, this “tradition” was actually fabricated in the 1940s as a clever marketing ploy to distinguish certain mezcals on the shelf. Blanton, Richard E.; Kowalewski, Stephen A.; Feinman, Gary M.; Appel, Jill (1982). "Monte Albán's Hinterland, Part I: Prehispanic Settlement Patterns of the Central and Southern Parts of the Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico". University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Museum of Anthropology Memoir 15. 15. These caterpillars infest agave plants before they are harvested. Were they not preserved as alcoholic garnishes, the caterpillars would flourish into the tequila giant-skipper butterfly or the comadia redtenbacheri moth respectively. This one might be cheating. Rather than an agave worm inside a bottle of tequila, this is actually a bottle of tequila within a giant spectacle of an agave worm. La Penca Con Gusano – which translates to “La Penca with a Worm” – is a mezcal that truly wears its agave worm on its sleeve. In fact, some bottles of La Penca can come with two worms inside them. Food is not included, but we have many options of places that only locals know where you can eat with confidence. The mezcal factory! Well, if you like genuinely good mezcal, don’t get too excited. The mezcal is not bad, but it’s far from the best you can taste in Oaxaca. They will get you through the process from the agave plant to the final product. Which you’ll taste in the end. Balkansky, Andrew K. (2002). "The Sola Valley and the Monte Albán State. A Study of Zapotec Imperial Expansion". University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Museum of Anthropology Memoir 36. 36.

Our friends took a tour a couple of weeks before we went to Monte Albán. They were told it’s not possible to get there on their own, only 400 people a day, 100 people at one time are allowed in (Covid rules), and because of that, it’s necessary to get there early to be able to make it. If you find yourself staring at all the bottles of tequila and mezcal, which one would catch your eye first, worm or no-worm? The worm is simply a great talking point when you have shots. Despite the worm’s established culinary legacy, the flavor of agave worms in your mezcal probably won’t be putting its best foot forward. Here, I’m not just sharing opinions; I’m weaving tales from the rich tapestry of my experiences over these three decades. The General Wine Company is a family-owned and operated wine merchant in Liphook, Hampshire, England. Founded in 1982, the company has been supplying retail and trade customers with an unrivalled service and fastidious attention to detail. At the end of any of the tours we can leave you at your hotel, airbnb or wherever you like. (downtown area of the city of Oaxaca). The bus from Oaxaca to Monte Albán leaves every hour on the weekdays, and every half an hour on the weekends Why is it better to visit Monte Albán without a tour

The second myth comes from the plantations of the agave plant. The Jimadors (plantation workers) who harvest the agave plants could not tell two clear bottles apart; one was mezcal, the other tequila. There are two main myths about how the worm got into the bottle. The first is that it was put in the bottle of mezcal as a marketing ploy, and it worked! My journey has seen me as an owner of sophisticated bars and renowned liquor shops, and even as a Mezcal distiller, honing the craft from scratch. Whether you’ve been searching for the legendary tequila worm or have been wondering if it’s purported effects are true, you should now know the answers to the most pressing questions. While the worm might not be as magical as some tequila stories claim, it is worth a try if you plan on drinking mezcal the traditional way. Tequila and mezcal both originate from Mexico and are made from agave, a form of succulent that grows in the Mexican desert. Both are widely popular throughout the world, but they aren’t the same thing.

In reality, they are one of two types of mezcal larvae, either a meocuile (white maguey worm), or a chilocuile (red maguey worm). Reports indicate that Subway may not use real tuna in its sandwiches, and other corporate abuses have come to light. In 2005, agave farmers had a blowout with the Mexican government. Here’s what happened: the government wanted to increase consumer confidence in tequila and mezcal. They wanted to create a law that stated that maguey farmers couldn’t get certification if they used worms in their bottles. However, if you’re adamant about trying one, Santo Gusano is relatively better than others in that category. Is Monte Alban a real Mezcal? It resembles a lower-grade Jamaican rum on the palate, featuring unusual dominant cinnamon roll flavors along with hints of acetone.
