About this deal

The object of the game, like most deck building games, is to collect the most victory points (VPs) by the end of the game through board control, spy networks, assassination, and manipulation. I recently had an issue with a missing card from a purchase and they liaised with the publisher to arrange for it to be sent to me.

Tyrants of the Underdark - BoardGameGeek Solo Variant | Tyrants of the Underdark - BoardGameGeek

The ebb and flow of the board, trying to simultaneously balance the deckbuilding while making sure you are competitive in controlling the board. There’s a little bit of creativity and you could argue I’m underselling the potency of these effects, but overall it’s not a game full of drama. In Tyrants of the Underdark, you will be battling back and forth over the territories with your friends, with every turn giving you the enticing chance to burn their troops to ash with a Red Dragon or chase them away with your Drow Bounty Hunter.

The combination of troop deployment, troop assassination, and spies make the area control of Tyrants fun, but chaotic. Mixing deck building with a board wasn’t novel when Tyrants of the Underdark came out, and nowadays this revised edition is competing with genre classics like Dune: Imperium.

Below is a high level summary of the game; however, feel free to download a pdf of the official rules here. When I needed to reference a rule or question, it always seemed to be right where I expected it to be. Too many games allow players to stack resources, leading to them “popping off” mid game, and running away with the victory. After a few plays I couldn’t shake the feeling that this was inherently stronger than the more conspicuous tactical maneuvering taking place in plain sight. I’ve always pushed hard to get promoted/trash cards to manipulate and winnow my deck because of this. It’s a minor loss which leaves the game a little less visually spectacular but a lot more compact and affordable. It seemed partially because we didn't see many minions that allowed for extra card draws, which tend to bog these games down.

A central marketplace has new minions that can be recruited through influence, one of two resources in the game; purchased cards are placed in your discard pile, then shuffled together with other cards in your deck when needed. To be honest, this is our type of game, especially because it plays well for two and in under an hour. It takes some of the best aspects of deck-building and area control, and combines them into a game which flows perfectly and never outstays its welcome. You can grasp control of such non-pronounceable places such as "Ss'zuraass'nee" and "Menzoberranzan".
