There is a solo book for Frostgrave , Perilous Dark, that is part solo senario list and part philosophical treatise on how to design a solo scenario. The third edition really packs in more than ever, and after poring over the PDF download I'm rummaging through my bits box for miniatures to use to create a crew. I was enraptured with the crazy hodge-podge of sci-fi trappings, only to be disappointed at how little they really mattered.

This figure is clearly based on an Angus McBride sketch, found in the Middle-Earth Role-Playing rulebook (any doubt being removed by the subtle decorations on his vest). The game is still one in which the story of your cast of characters underpins the entire experience, though it relies on a second player at present. Amidst this chaos, thousands of independent operators – smugglers, relic hunters, freedom fighters, and mercenaries – roam the dead stars in small ships, scratching out a living any way they can. Inspiration doesn’t have to come from sci-fi, and when someone suggested this idea to me it absolutely had to be included.Biggest of all, the positioning of loot has been reworked to prevent players handing themselves an easy win through shrewd – and cheap – placement tactics. Following up a beloved game is never easy, and Stargrave shows there’s much success to be had at sticking to the formula for any sequel.

At the start of the game, credits are the resource players spend to design their squad around the captain and first mate. Frostgrave, after all, has a wealth of expansions available, one of which is a module allowing you to play solo scenarios against AI-driven enemies. I've long really enjoyed Nordic Weasel's line of games, and the author is a top bloke besides, active on Twitter and always easygoing if you've got questions about how a rule is meant to be interpreted or if you're just looking for suggestions on miniatures.

Make them an AdMech tech-priest lookalike, with one too many cybernetic enhancements, capable of supporting the rest of your squishy crew with energy shields and camouflage.

Players are guided through a series of steps during each campaign turn, following up rumours, chasing down story opportunities, grappling with rivals and resupplying before each chance to hit the table for a game played out with miniatures and a simple yet intuitive decision matrix for different enemy types. Looking at them lined up now, the Reaper hobbit looks a little more like a dwarf than a hobbit compared to Aragorn.Despite its more colourful elements, Stargrave is very much a tactical miniatures skirmisher in body and soul, sitting snugly in the realm of wargames, but peppering its streamlined combat with avenues of lucid RPG exploration.
