There is music, aliens, a secret (which wasn't that secret as I figured out Neila quite early on), band-battles, life debts, a big scary star with a bigger attitude, fun illustrations, good characters, a chimp named Armstrong, lots of excitement, a great ending that made me cheer and laugh.However, what makes this book stand out is the electric soundtrack that accompanies it, offering a great hook to encourage children to read with the promise of occasional music breaks.

Our own parents couldn’t even pretend to like the noises that leaked out of our garage – the place where we rehearsed every day after school. It surpassed (some of) my expectations: the quality of writing itself turned out to be what I had expected, and it was a bit Diary of a Wimpy Kid at times (which I don't rate). What I loved the most is that McFly recorded all the songs in this book and you can listen to them while reading the book! George, Neila and Bash are the worst band on Earth, but George desperately wants them to be brilliant! They're now competing against aliens from every galaxy and if they don't win, they risk never coming back to earth again! George, Bash and Neila try everything to win a competition at their school to win tickets for a concert of their favourite artist. My son therefore had to put up with my attempt at singing the lyrics and ignoring the QR codes altogether!As well as his career as an author, by the age of 21, Tom had penned 10 UK number 1 singles and is the founding member of the band McFLY. The characters are also far less interesting and there is a lack of humour that his other books excel at. We’re big Tom Fletcher fans in this house having loved all his other books, but felt a little disappointed with this one.

Sadly, the illustrator is not credited on the cover, however the credits page does say that the interior illustrations and design were by Dynamo.If I read this to my class, I will make sure to read something of slightly higher quality too - perhaps some Roald Dahl!
