Caliban resents Prospero for confining him to one part of the island, but he also resents him for the kindnesses the magician showed him: Prospero taking the time to teach Caliban his language, for instance, has only succeeded in giving Caliban the means to curse his miserable lot using new words.

Throughout the course of the play, Miranda acts as a foil to Prospero's more violent instincts and serves as a sounding board to move the play's plot further.
However, Prospero’s brother, Antonio, betrayed him and took his title, banishing him to live on an island with his daughter Miranda. In this play there are two candidate soliloquies by Prospero which critics have taken to be Shakespeare's own "retirement speech".

This was an opportunity that let her too not only to express her sexuality, but to also reclaim her independence. When Prospero doesn’t want Miranda to see or hear something, he simply uses his magic powers to send her to sleep. She is openly compassionate and unaware of the evils of the world that surrounds her, learning of her father's fate only as the play begins. Prospero is the main guardian in her life, but she developed personality traits such as kind-heartedness that are, as many describe, distinct in comparison to Prospero’s.
Miranda is an obedient daughter, as proved by her dismay when she forgets herself and reveals her name to Ferdinand, but she is also a young woman in love, and when her father is occupied, she immediately looks to release Ferdinand from his labors. Ariel uses music to lead the courtiers astray, while Sebastian and Antonio plot to kill the King while he is asleep. When a ship is wrecked and the survivors come on to the island Prospero recruits two of them to help him overthrow and kill Prospero.
