Liquorice boats” are the sweet liquorice version of the Pim Pim, and sometimes you can even find the two mixed together. Stir in whatever it is you are using and then place the bowl in the fridge for around an hour so it sets a little. Traditionally a chocolate salami is made with crushed biscuits (cookies) and sometimes nuts (neither of which I used). The Cloetta brand itself dates back to 1862 when brothers Christoph, Nutin and Bernard Cloëtta founded their original Danish chocolate factory.

These soft gummies are shaped like old-fashioned dummies, with a ring at the end that you can even stick your finger through in case you’re afraid you might lose your sweets! They are soft and juicy; the usual flavor is raspberry and they are often covered with a layer of sugar for some crunch as you bite in.That, combined with the unfamiliar flavours means I won’t be picking any of the Polly range to taste just yet. The one where I spent literally hours in my cellar (it was the middle of summer and boiling hot – the cellar was the coolest place in the house) back bent over, attaching tiny silver balls like my life depended on it? These fish-shaped liquorice bites come in a number of iterations, from sweet liquorice to salty liquorice, and even sour lemon (they’re yellow).

Toffee is perhaps a little more identifiable, and the milk chocolate coating works well with it, but all three have the same (very) sweet taste that overrides any other flavours. With a very happy Elephant on the packaging, Snøre (“lace”) is one of those candies that kids really enjoy. Not having tasted Påskmust before I couldn’t tell you if it is similar to the festive drink…but on trying it again knowing the flavour, I can definitely taste cola – which goes really well with the dark chocolate as both are rich and full bodied. Seriously though, it’s the thrill of making something for a purpose that I enjoy most, like birthday cakes.

Continuing the car theme, Ferraribilar are a large, chewy (not overly soft) gummy candy shaped like Ferrari race cars. The Sura Colanappar are a particularly unique favorite: cola-flavored dummy-shaped lollies with a sour sugar coating.

They’re defintiely not as sour as Swedish surströmming, and don’t really have a cola flavor to them; it’s generally fruity and the sour tang is the dominant taste.

Today, Rowntree's® remain the nation's fruity favourite, with more single tubes of Fruit Pastilles sold than any other fruit confectionery product in the UK. This range of sweets (found Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Estonia) is composed of chewy, foamy gumdrops coated in chocolate, and sold in a variety of flavours and coatings. Combine the egg, sugar and coffee and add to the melted chocolate mixture and regularly stirring, cook for around five minutes (just until the sugar melts).

I’ve seen fancy ones done up with string, but the instructions for how to tie the string were harder to understand than the theory of relativity, so I left it out. Some people aren’t into mint and chocolate, but for the After Eight fans out there: you’re going to love Marianne. I really don’t care about the prize (although it is a beautiful Bosch kitchen machine which would look dang pretty sitting in my kitchen), it’s the winning that counts.
