About this deal

When Stewart entered parliament, we on the opposition benches were relieved to see that he was only 5ft 8in and (by his own description) scrawny. There was room for more content though if some of the repetitiveness on the theme of being stonewalled wasn't drawn out every time. He served as a minister throughout Theresa May’s government as Minister of State for International Development, Minister of State for Africa and Minister of State for Prisons.

Politics on the Edge by Rory Stewart review — the oddball Politics on the Edge by Rory Stewart review — the oddball

Rory Stewart's book is a sobering insight into British politics from the perspective of a fascinating man.It is hard not to read into the thinly veiled subtext that the worst thing about Cameron is not his politics or his management style, nor his elevation of Liz Truss, but that he held little affection for Rory. An enigma clad occasionally in a kilt, and boasting a storied background comprising stints in the Middle East, Rory Stewart was never going to be constrained by the typical stereotypes for a Tory MP. A brilliant if slightly depressing story of British politics and how difficult it is for one man to make a difference inside our political institutions.

Politics on the Edge by Rory Stewart: a centrist lament Politics on the Edge by Rory Stewart: a centrist lament

Rory Stewart served in the UK Cabinet as Secretary of State for International Development, and before that as Prisons Minister, Minister for Africa, Minister for Development, Environment Minister and Chair of the Defence Committee. In The Right to Rule, Riley Smith suggests that though such consistent upheaval may have kept the Tories alive for now, it is unlikely to work forever. Soon after he was elected as a Conservative MP, Rory Stewart tried to sit down next to a party colleague. Plenty will pick it up and feel reasonable anger at the charlatans at the helm who took down May and never gave Stewart a chance. His plainly miserable time in Parliament is the reader’s clear gain: this is one of the most captivating political books in recent memory.Rarely before has the life of a government minister been described in such granular detail or with such literary flair. The latter of which has produced many of Stewart’s Conservative Party peers, notably including David Cameron, Liz Truss and Boris Johnson, all of which feature throughout Stewart’s memoir. It’s just one insiders view and I’m sure other people have other stories to tell, but it does expose the disaster of Conservative rule and the inability of politicians to really lead for the nation rather than serve themselves.

About the Author: Rory Stewart served in the UK Cabinet as Secretary of State for International Development, and before that as Prisons Minister, Minister for Africa, Minister for Development and Minister for the Environment. Rory Stewart is now the president of the non-profit organisation GiveDirectly, a visiting fellow at Yale's Jackson School and the co-host with Alastair Campbell of the UK's leading podcast The Rest Is Politics. May’s treatise on the state of modern Britain, The Abuse of Power, is well-intentioned but hard work.In short, the problem – as diagnosed by May and Stewart – is not in fact anything to do with the institutional “abuse of power” or the systematic eschewal of expertise.

Whatever buccaneering, low-tax, high-growth vision Truss had for Britain was a far cry from the cautious and parochial styling of May. She thinks they crashed her deal just “because they could” without considering that anyone might have good reason to. He bypassed the rightwing pro-Johnson media by holding open meetings and walks – a strategy that saw his ratings rise with the public. After May announced she would be stepping down, Stewart stood as a candidate to be Leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in the 2019 leadership contest. With “some of the monarch’s stiff authority” Theresa May promoted him to a cabinet role split between the Department for International Development and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, where an unhappy Boris Johnson held the position of foreign secretary. In fact, much of The Abuse of Power is a similar exercise in self-styling as duty-bound, honest, fair, conscientious and co-operative. From the former Conservative Cabinet minister and co-presenter of hit podcast The Rest is Politics, a searing insider's account of ten extraordinary years in ParliamentA political journey through turbulent timesOver the course of a decade from 2010, Rory Stewart went from being a political outsider to standing for prime minister - before being sacked from a Conservative Party that he had come to barely recognise. Although Stewart may have offered analysis as to how to resolve certain frustrations and short-comings of the British political system - for instance, the lack of ministers who have any specific experience in running the departments arbitrarily allocated to them - perhaps Stewart has left his manifesto of solutions for another day. Where, for example, Boris Johnson slaves to belie his true self, Rory Stewart slaves to announce his (or at least, his own conception of it).
