About this deal

Cato’s self-confessed “nomadic” lifestyle led to him selling his publishing rights to Groove Armada to help finance the purchase of his farm. Comprised of various labels we know and love at Rough Trade (Bella Union, ATO, Speedy Wunderground, Phantasy, Heavenly, Mute and more) PIAS [Recordings] filter through some of the most diverse artistry to our racks, which we greatly enjoy digging into. As the meaning behind their label name suggests (a rough translation from Spanish as 'hill view') Loma Vista has climbed to the summit of today's musical landscape, engaging and representing a sweeping range of the most popular scenes and genres of today. Now, in 2022, it’s time for Groove Armada to celebrate their brilliant career with the career-spanning 25th-anniversary box-set ‘GA25’, set to be released on November 11, via BMG.

I know Luke Howard from Horse Meat Disco, who I bumped into the other night, is training as a psychodynamic therapist. But the best thing has been to share it with a mate and never lose sight of the total absurdity of the situation. The result has always been the production of memorable tracks, true firelighters for a dancefloor on fire. The pair remain at the forefront, too; festival favourites, 2022 proved to be one of their busiest ever years, with Groove Armada reaching new audiences in the process.A pair of DJs and crate-diggers turned producers, their infatuation with club culture added a sense of gravitas and heft to their chart crossover hits. Over the last few months he has disarmed packed rooms of rowdy concert goers, leaving them silent as they hold fast to every syllable sung.

Groove Armada: dance legends look back on an iconic career

This April, Groove Armada completed what was billed as their final tour (supported by Norman Jay MBE, PBR Streetgang, Ewan McVicar and Ishmael Ensemble), and are off for a five-consecutive-night run in Australia this November. We ended up doing this hopelessly nervous performance, wondering if anything would work,” he tells me. Technology has progressed through Groove Armada’s nine-album catalogue which has scored them three UK Top 10 albums, three nominations at the Grammys and the BRITs, plus a Billboard nomination. It is in celebration of this prolific and uncompromising way of seeing and living music that the duo has prepared a genuinely sonic celebration. Their latest album, 2020’s Edge of the Horizon, was recorded virtually between the two during lockdown, followed by “a totally sleepless week in Tom’s basement in east London, finishing it all off”.There would be someone sitting on the stairs, naked, with a sewing machine, repairing their nipple tassels. tour scheduled, the duo commissioned a series of remixes of their biggest tracks by Logic1000, Dance System, Ewan McVicar and more, and have been working on new music for their upcoming 25-track GA25 box set, to celebrate 25 of all things Groove Armada — again leading to some “super intense” sessions in Findlay’s basement studio. Obviously, we’ve said this in 2010, when we brought the live band to a close before…” says Cato, labelling Groove Armada’s then 25-man live crew as “commercial idiocy”. The effort we were putting in to perform just wasn’t being appreciated next to the superstar DJs wearing capes. This sent Cato down a rabbit hole from growing vegetables in his garden, to the heart of Wild Farm Now, a community of 50 farmers who supply supermarkets from restorative and sustainable means.

New music plays a key part of the GA25 celebrations, with the duo recruiting some of today’s leading underground artists to remix their most iconic tracks, packed into a box set celebrating an award winning career that has seen them produce an impressive, record-breaking body of work.Findlay has hung onto his, which means the pair retain some creative control, like saying no to the American Navy who wanted to use ‘Little by Little’ for a recruitment video. Nearly meeting Prince 10 years ago in San Francisco’s Ruby Lounge was pretty amazing,” says Findlay. The duo also recently commissioned a next remix series, most recently collaborating with McVicar on a ‘Spacehouse’ remix of their 1999 track ‘I See You Baby’. Among the tracks included are iconic Groove Armada cuts including 'Superstylin'' and 'I See You Baby', as well as 'Song 4 Mutya', 'If Everybody `Looked The Same' and 'Back to my Roots' feat. His full length debut on Daptone Records is equal parts raw feeling and elegance and exudes confidence and charm.

Groove is the watchword and the special ingredient of this new single that marks Groove Armada’s first release since his 2020 ‘ Lover4Now’. Now with a massively successful US tour opening for sweet soul darlings Thee Sacred Souls behind him, 2023 is sure to be a propitious year for Daptone's newest signee. When we delivered our first album [1998’s Northern Star], we were um-ing and ah-ing about what songs to leave off the cassette version. Earlier this year, Groove Armada – musical duo Tom Findlay and Andy Cato – embarked on their final UK tour, opening at Glasgow’s Barrowlands before closing out with two nights at Brixton Academy, where they were joined byNorman Jay, PBR StreetgangandEwan McVicar.More than 23 years after ‘At the River’ reached number 19, Groove Armada’s appearance on Top of the Pops still gives Andy Cato nightmares.
