About this deal

I opened the front door this morning to put something in the bin when I found the majority of their long leaves had dropped to the floor. Mine have been in the ground around 10 years - they started flowering after around three or four years. However, if you live anywhere that isn’t a warm, tropical place, your cordyline should be a strictly indoor houseplant.

Sorry about the quality of the pictures, I just grabbed my camera and was being buffered by the strong winds we have here at the moment but you can see they are beyond saving. There are no preventative or control measures, unfortunately, as the main cause of these problems was the intense cold in December 2010. Take care if cutting down a large specimen with a thick trunk – it may be best to get a specialistcontractor to do this. Inspiration, tips and how-tos for a more verdant lifestyle for city dwellers and suburban farmers alike, HappySprout offers a modern take on green living that sparks joy from the roots up. They didn’t die and re-sprouted with enormous vigour from the base the following spring and to this day remain as 4 metre tall specimens.

How to grow cordyline / RHS Gardening

It took me ages to clear the front garden and I look outside now and its as it was before I picked them up. In younger Cordylines where they have not developed a clear woody stem, things might be trickier in terms of caring for cordylines. When I am coming around the corner and can see my trees from a distance they are definitely not happy anymore. They come in a range of sizes, from small plants for summer bedding displays to large stand-alone specimens. Wrapping plants for the winter protects the leaves from damage and gives protection to the growing point of the plant. Water early in the day so that any water that splashed the leaves has a chance to dry out before the temperature cools.

Cordyline Guide: How to Plant and Care for Cordylines

There are several cultivars of this species, including ‘Dark Star’ with reddish leaves, ‘Jive’ that grows like a small tree, and ‘Pink Champagne’ with leaves of green, cream, and pink variegation. To avoid water building up in the pot, either stand pots on gravel or raise just off the ground so excess water drains freely. With cordylines in containers or coastal-style plantings, a mulch of gravel will give an attractive finish and also help to enhance the seaside feel. To take terminal cuttings you should remove a stem with a terminal bud or growing point at the tip and several buds along the stem.A cordyline plant can also be grown in pots and if the container is sufficiently large (such as the size of a wooden half barrel) a cordyline can remain in the same one for a number of years. You’ll find them in most nurseries and in all but the warmest regions, cordyline should only be grown indoors.

Cordyline / RHS Gardening

Cordylines in containers need regular watering during the growing season, but should be kept fairly dry in winter. It looks equally good in city or coastal gardens and anywhere you want to add an element of the exotic. When grown in containers, however, they require regular watering and feeding, and winter protection, except in mild areas.

Everyone around here loves them and I am sure others feel the same as me seeing them look so poorly. So be prepared to either bring them indoors or move them to a sheltered spot and wrap them with fleece.
