About this deal

He points out that the dials on his guitar amp go up to eleven because “ … you turn it up to ten, and where do you go from there? With unequaled insight and brio, David Brooks, the New York Times columnist and bestselling author of Bobos in Paradise, has long explored and explained the way we live. Brown's very personal story is as moving as his tales of debauchery whilst running the country's premier 'lads' mag are hilarious. The sense of peace is a far cry from the mania of the 90s, when Brown was the enfant terrible of UK publishing and founding editor of Loaded, the lads’ mag so notorious that Brown became a celebrity in his own right – a mouthy media presence with a trademark head of curls, fond of bigging himself and his magazine up, and with a reputation for partying hard.

It's just a regular day when ordinary kids Jack and Annie are whisked away in the magic tree house to the Galapagos islands, where they must save a giant tortoise from an erupting volcano! James noted that Loaded is now frequently lumped in with the other later 'lad's mags' such as Maxim and Nuts due to it featuring similar content focusing on alcohol and women but that he felt Loaded was above that genre, it was a brief comment but I would be really interested to read his deeper opinion on that and the genre that Loaded arguably spawned whether intended or not. James Brown is a legend and might not have made it out alive from his career as creator and chief of Loaded magazine in the 1990s.I liked the James in this book but I feel he may have hidden a lot of his bad behaviour as he said a few times that he had condensed down the original draft of his anecdotes significantly. This might be true, but they couldn’t truly tame the impulsive and occasionally reckless editor they hired. But Move on Up by Curtis Mayfield, White Man in Hammersmith Palais by The Clash, and Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division all remain terribly thrilling, no matter how often I hear them. and “You give me the horn”, although these look pretty tame compared with what followed in the men’s mag sector, when imitators such as FHM and Maxim entered the market and began competing over “nipple counts”. I mean, we once got Olympic athletes and sports stars to comment on the technique of the stick men on Fox’s Sports biscuits!

He floated his own publishing company on AIM and became an in-demand public speaker and creative consultant for leading brands, agencies and publishing houses. While Loaded’s sales boomed and he was supposedly enjoying his imperial phase, the truth was that Brown was also self-destructing, blotting out his inner pain with absurd amounts of booze and cocaine. Over the last few months he has disarmed packed rooms of rowdy concert goers, leaving them silent as they hold fast to every syllable sung. This is a very well written account of a glorious time in modern history, one that is personal to me anyway as a rabid subscriber to the mag in its genre-shaking first three years. On one occasion, Brown says, the references to narcotics became so overt that the publisher at IPC became worried the drug squad might be about to turn up. James quit Loaded and embarked on a life of more or less leisure, touring with bands, doing the odd commission, working when he felt like it. The James Brown I know would rather play keepie-uppies on Filey beach with his small son than go clubbing down the Reeperbahn with Primal Scream.

I remember opening The Charlatans first single when no one had heard of them for that week’s NME single reviews and it just stood out in its structure and confidence. Over its 40 years in business, PIAS has grown to be one of the largest independently-owned music groups in the world, carving out its own in-house recorded music division PIAS [Recordings]. Loaded's unexpected success legitimised (and paid for) James's lifestyle, and it wasn't until he crashed and burned at GQ, and went through rehab, that any sense of perspective kicked in. Un rotundo alegato a favor de la libertad y en contra del totalitarismo que se ha convertido en un clásico de la literatura del siglo XX.

James Brown is the author of several novels, and the memoirs, The Los Angeles Diaries, This River, and Apology to the Young Addict (to-be-published March 2020). It mainly follows James up until he left GQ magazine in 2000, any subsequent work is either not mentioned or very briefly covered. In the book there’s a brief mention of Loaded’s similarity to Jackass and Jeremy Clarkson’s Top Gear, but not much pause for thought on the wider impact of what they did.
