About this deal

But there is one thing that makes decision-making diffcult: When I'm looking now at your latest review of the Samsung NX1, I could think that this is probably the right camera for me. Gold award. The a7 II is heavy, yet comfortable to hold. The shutter button has been moved to a more accessible spot, but the command dials have been made significantly less accessible. Custom buttons are plentiful, though not always that easy to reach on the fly, the 'C1' and 'C2' buttons specifically are quite inaccessible. Fortunately, like the other A7-series cameras, the A7 II has an excellent electronic viewfinder. This provides a nice clear view of the scene, with plenty of detail. The image in the EVF is natural, with just a shimmer here and there to remind you that it’s an electronic device rather than an optical one. However, colours are a little less saturated in the EVF than they are on the screen, in captured images and in real life. Step-up to ISO 12,800 and 25,600, however, and the noise reduction applied to JPEGs starts to take its toll, with more noticeable loss of detail and smoothing at 100%. Simultaneously captured raw files offer the opportunity to fine-tune noise reduction to find an acceptable mid-ground, with some noise visible along with greater detail. For the most part, though, we recommend avoiding the top sensitivity setting if you want to make prints or view images at A4 size or larger. I own a Leica M9 rangefinder and a few Leica lenses that are hands down the most impressive lenses I’ve ever shot. The Sony A7II offers me a camera body that has image stabilization with my Leica lenses, as well as an excellent sensor that can handle low light and high ISO better than any Leica rangefinder on the market. Does this make me want to sell my Leica? No, not a chance.

The focus peaking is a nice touch, but it’s not something that I rely on all that much. The zoom assisted focusing through the EVF (Electronic Viewfinder) is where the pudding is for me, I love being able to zoom in nice and close when manually focusing. The a7 II is a fun camera to shoot with and for most folks, it will satisfy your needs and then some. Those who have come to expect the very best from full framers will find the sensor in the a7 II doesn't quite live up to competitors, like the D750. Overall though, it's a very solid choice for any photographer. ISO 1600, 1/30 sec at f/9. To compensate for the increased weight of the a7 II, the size and depth of the grip has been increased, resulting in a very comfortable camera to hold. The front and rear facing control dials have been substantially shrunken down and recessed into the camera body, making it nearly impossible to accidentally nudge them without knowing it, a frequent complaint of a7 users. Like the NEX-7, the A7 is a camera that you needed to spend an hour or two painfully customizing buttons and settings, but once done, it becomes pretty darned good. The shutter button has also moved from the top of the camera body, to the top of the grip itself, and is now angled slightly downward. Its diameter has been increased slightly over that of the original a7.One surprise when you use the Alpha 7 II for the first time is how loud the shutter is. You could be forgiven for thinking that it’s an SLR with a mirror slapping out of the way before the shutter opens.

In addition, Picture Profiles offer the ability set the Gamma to Sony's S-Log2 for reduced contrast and greater dynamic range, plus the Time Code feature helps with scene identification and footage syncing from multiple cameras. You can also attach an XLR microphone via an adaptor. fps (Frames Per Second) Burst Rate– This was a huge step up for me after using the Canon 5D Mark II for many years. Creating HDR images is completely possible without a tripod. You wouldn't necessarily say this was one of the best Sony cameras today, given the technical advances that have happened since then, but it's ideal for anyone shopping around for the cheapest full frame cameras right now. Eye-level composition is achieved via a crystal-clear 2.36million-dot, 0.5-inch EVF, one that's so good that it’s easy to forget you aren’t using an optical finder. In addition to this, there’s a helpful sensor just above the EVF window, which detects when the camera is held to the eye and switches power from the main screen to the finder accordingly. We also found the a7 II to have 1-2 stops worse ISO performance than an a7S or D750, shown in our studio scene& confirmed by DXO. This poor ISO performance was more forgivable in the original a7 lineup, perhaps, but not 4 cameras in. Especially given all the competition- the 6D, D750, a7R, and a7S all outperform it by a good margin. Autofocus Although lighter and smaller, there was still a lot of room left for improvement and a fullframe sensor wasn’t enough. For the working professional and serious hobbyist, the Sony A7 series was intriguing, but still wasn’t quite there yet as a viable replacement for the DSLR. Autofocus and start-up times are also up to 40% faster than those on the A7, the former thanks to a 117-point phase-detect AF system that works in combination with 25-point contrast-detect AF, ensuring sharpness no matter where the subject lies in the frame. My Sony/Leica setup may not have autofocus, but it has image stabilization, and MUCH better dynamic ranges and ISO performance. Oh, and it’s half the size and much lighter.

We haven’t fully tested the video capability of the A7 II, but our initial assessment is that it produces high-quality footage, which generally looksnatural. Lab tests For me, my favorite prime lenses to use are a 35mm f/1.4 and a 50mm f/1.4. The general rule of thumb, as many of you are aware, is that you should really never go below the focal length in shutter speed to avoid motion blur. I typically like to stay even higher since I have the tendency to shake slightly. Like the other cameras in the Alpha 7 series, the A7 II has a rather angular, but attractive old-school appearance. According to Sony, the sensor housing has been made stronger in the A7 II, with more magnesium alloy than in the original camera. This, combined with the camera’s moisture and dust sealing, makes it durable. The battery life if pretty good. I wouldn’t say its great, but it’s better than I expected, lasting over 4 hours of shooting no problem. When shooting with an OSS lens, the a7 II compensates for Roll as well as X and Y axis movements using sensor-based IS, Pitch and Yaw are compensated for using lens-based IS. When a non-OSS lens is affixed, even if it's a third party lens with an adapter, 5-axis IS is accomplished fully in-camera. Not only do I use it on longer lenses, but it is amazingly handy on my 35mm and 50mm prime lenses when in low light situations and I have more wiggle room on shutter speed. As the sun starts to go down and I would normally stop at 1/100 sec and start bumping my ISO, I now have the ability to go all the way down to 1/15 or 1/20 sec and shoot at a much lower ISO. While I still have no desire to sell my Leica, the Sony A7II gives me very similar image quality and offers better dynamic range and ISO performance.
