All the while he’s explaining this in such detail that you’d think his team is playing Salzburg tomorrow and I’m wondering why on earth he has gone off on this tangent. Source: Pep Guardiola's Manchester City training session during preseason tour of USA - Nissan Stadium, Nashville 29th July 2017 As a rule, Guardiola gives three team talks before each match, each of them about 15 minutes long. He uses images to clarify his points, usually video footage that doesn’t last more than seven minutes. The three talks follow the same pattern. The book also illustrate the difficulties of managing star players and their inflated egos, especially when there are more than 1 star competing for the same spots, as well as the difficulties of transferring Pep’s philosophy onto several rigid or entitled players. And it also portrays a vivid picture of the pressure that football managers constantly receive from the fans, the club hierarchies, and the media. Guillem Balague clearly interviewed subjects at length for this book but I found it troublesome his habit of quoting at length ( and apparently verbatim ) long tracts of dialogue that had apparently occured some years before - this worried me as it felt like revisionsism to a certain extent. That is why I would say that not only is this one of the best sports biographies I have read, but it is an absolutely brilliant biography full-stop. PEP GUARDIOLA: BEST QUOTES FROM PLAYERS “I had a unique master. I grew a lot with Pep as a player and learnt a great deal from him. Some managers are superb tacticians, but Pep would also describe the moves you had to make on the pitch and what would happen then. And it did!" (Lionel Messi) “He is a genius who reads the game and covers every situation imaginable. He is always showing us how to create space and find solutions and there is no manager like him, which makes him probably the best in the world." (Ilkay Gündoğan) “There is one thing you can be sure of — he wants to dominate. People associate his teams with the number of goals they score but his teams also don’t concede a lot. He always wants to be on the front foot, having the ball, possession, and he wants to dominate." (Thierry Henry) “I have learned a lot from Pep. He’s a genius. I can learn more from him in an hour than from others in one year. He not only lifts you to the next level on the pitch, but also in your mind. He has revealed totally new options to me. I did not know that was possible when I got to Munich. He found a new position for me." (Douglas Costa) “He is an incredible coach on a completely different level in terms of tactics. He really helps players develop and he even helped me improve at the age of 30." (Phillip Lahm) Kevin Magnussen's car bursts into FLAMES after huge crash at Mexico Grand Prix - as the race is red-flagged and Haas star is driven to the medical centre Barcelona star Ilkay Gundogan and his wife Sara Arfaoui 'complain to the club about feeling ABANDONED' because they had no help with housing when moving from Manchester City - where she had moaned about 'all frozen food' in restaurants
