About this deal

Guerrero was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Walter Coles, an American of English descent, and Lucy Guerrero, who was from Chile. Guerrero spent her childhood living in San Diego, California, and Huntington Beach, California. In 1972, when she was aged eight, her mother died of lymphoma cancer. Lisa is a graduate of Edison High School in Huntington Beach, California which is located in Orange County. [1] [2] Career [ edit ] Early career and acting roles [ edit ] I always tried to be Lisa’s biggest advocate, starting from the moment that I hired her,” Gaudelli said in the statement. “Her memory of that season and mine are quite different. This is the first time I’m learning of her pregnancy, and I’m sorry that she struggled through that difficult time without the full support of the team surrounding her. I was sitting in a row next to the family. They were grasping hands in nervous anticipation. Monica was near enough that I could hear her and other family members quietly weeping. As the verdict was read, the family gasped. When the court was dismissed, everyone spilled out into the hallway, embracing and sobbing. I was a journalist, but as I watched this unfold, I felt like a member of Juliette’s extended family.

During her career in sports broadcasting, Guerrero covered Super Bowls, Worlds Series, NBA Finals, and interviewed sports superstars. From the outside it seemed glamourous, but often she was miserable, told to smile more, argue less, and show a lot of leg and cleavage. Colleagues would joke—sometimes on national TV—that she clinched big interviews because of sexual acts rather than talent. She made a mistake on air during the opening game on Monday Night Football that cost her her sportscasting career... and almost her life.Guerrero wrote a memoir titled Warrior: My Path to Being Brave which was published by Hachette Books in January 2023. [14] I've been a cheerleader. A corporate executive. A Barbie Doll. A sportscaster. A soap opera vixen. A sideline reporter. A Playboy cover model. A Diamond Diva. A red-carpet correspondent. An investigative journalist. A disrupter. Still, I'm glad I read Warrior -- I won't soon forget about a couple of the anecdotes she shared, and I hadn't heard them before. Lisa Guerrero chronicles her iconic career--from dealing with harassment as a sports broadcaster to chasing "bad guys" for Inside Edition-- and proves that through small, daily acts, bravery is a muscle we can strengthen over time.

Warrior by Lisa Guerrero | Hachette Book Group

In total, Guerrero has won over 35 national journalism awards and honors since becoming Inside Edition's chief investigative correspondent in 2010. This is a book about bravery. I decided to write it because every day I receive messages from viewers asking me how I’m able to fearlessly investigate and interview bad guys. They want to know where my courage comes from. And my answer contradicts everything journalists have been taught. But I’m not a typical journalist—I was never trained in a traditional newsroom. I didn’t receive a journalism degree. I didn’t even finish college. Inside Edition isn't really my thing, but I'm definitely interested in memoirs by women who've worked in sports journalism, so I wanted to give Warrior by Lisa Guerrero a try. We found the apartment building where Charyse lived. When she returned from a night shift, I raced up to her car as she opened the door. I wedged my body in between her and the open door. If she decided to drive off, she’d have to take me with her. Most journalists would wrap it up there—she’d given me a “No comment.” It really was enough for a good story. But it wasn’t enough for the people who loved Juliette and were demanding justice for her. I continued to pepper Charyse with questions.I was very cynical about it,’’ Guerrero said. “I said, ‘OK, I will do these pictures and I will do this cover because I’ll get to be 40 and a Latina on the cover of Playboy — very rare. I am very comfortable in my sexuality and my femininity, as are many Latinas. And I had fun doing the photo shoot, and I have no regrets about that. But I knew it was going to be really controversial. And they’re gonna be interested in talking to me. And I’m going to have a plan, because they’re going to ask me, ‘What’s next?’’’ During her career in sports broadcasting, Guerrero covered Super Bowls, Worlds Series, NBA Finals, and interviewed sports superstars. From the outside it seemed glamourous, but often she was miserable, told to smile more, argue less, and show a lot of leg and cleavage. Colleagues would joke—sometimes on national TV—that she clinched big interviews because of sexual acts rather than talent. She made a mistake on air during the opening game on Monday Night Football that cost her her sportscasting career… and almost her life. Thank you for listening to me,” Monica said as we hugged. “We did it! And we couldn’t have done it without you and your team.” My most recent project has been a series of Frida Kahlo mixed media mosaic portraits. Like many Latinas, I consider her my favorite artist, and she represents beauty, strength, passion, and a fearless devotion to social justice as well as to her lifelong love, Diego Rivera. It would be difficult to question her toughness now. The book opens with a harrowing tale of how Guerrero helped solve the murder of 2-year-old Juliette Geurts in Nebraska. The girl’s aunt had grown frustrated with the police investigation and reached out to the media. Guerrero jumped into action, followed leads she said the police ignored, pressed witnesses into identifying the suspect, and, finally, confronted the suspect himself. The resulting report spurred the convening of a grand jury and, ultimately, charges for Dustin Chauncey of intentional child abuse resulting in death.

There are light-hearted moments in the book, too. There was that time, for example, she walked down a hotel hallway with broadcaster John Madden after a production meeting in a conference room. He swiped a cookie off a leftover room service tray. “Finders, keepers,’’ Madden explained with a smile.Fast forward a few years, and Guerrero has achieved phenomenal success as Inside Edition’s Chief Investigative Correspondent. Her stories have led to arrests, changed federal legislation and policies at Fortune 500 companies, and helped shine a light on crime, scams, child abuse, and even cold case murders. And in the last decade alone, she has won over thirty-five national journalism honors and awards. Guerrero's past wasn't a complete mystery to me but I think a lot of people my age may have associated her with a short run as a sideline reporter on Monday Night Football and a place alongside the hooting and hollering-infused boys club vibe of Fox Sports' now horribly dated Best Damn Sports Show Period. She seemed to coast in on a wave of networks trying ton meld sex appeal to their sports content, but the book reveals that not only is Guerrero as capable a sports mind as her male counterparts (typically she's far more capable, really), but her determination and perceived fearlessness make her an exceptional person who can blaze trails and upset status quos with the best of them. Mom and I never spoke about what had happened. And maybe if she had lived beyond her twenty-nine years, the incident would have been just one of many stories about my fierce mom. But this moment has become how I remember my mom—beautiful, strong, and larger than life. She wouldn’t let anyone insult her or her family. As we walked out of the store, I was overcome with pride for this woman whom I would lose in less than a year.
