About this deal

In the interest of fairness, there are few other options available: Gnarbox 2.0* (256gb), WD’s My Passport Wireless* (500gb) and LaCie’s DJI CoPilot* (2tb) are the closest fits. Each of them have their positives but they’re also all very expensive choices. One of the biggest pains I have encountered with the Gnarbox apps is the slow performance of rendering videos. Even a simple 150 MB 4K video took a while to render. After it was done, I wanted to see it in higher resolution, but I could not – there was no way to zoom into the video. Turning the app sideways didn’t do anything either, which was rather frustrating. This shows that the Gnarbox team still has quite a bit of polishing to do with the apps, which will take some time to deliver. Conclusion Let’s have a look at my workflow, including a couple of workarounds for the times things don’t go to plan. First of all, the software down-sampled the original resolution from 6000×4000 to 4096×2736 pixels. Second, despite my attempts to keep highlights preserved, I clearly could not make an image that was bright enough in the foreground without blowing out the sky. Third, the resulting image contained a lot of JPEG artifacts, despite having a rather large image size of 6.2 MB. In summary, the apps are still in development and there are many more features we can expect to see in the future. For now, all we can do is hold on tight and hope that Gnarbox will keep on working hard to deliver more usable app updates. Battery Life

With up to 1TB internal SSD storage, one SD slot, two USB-C ports, and mobile apps designed to practically mirror capabilities of your in-home studio, GNARBOX is designed to save photographers time without sacrificing reliability or quality. As detailed in our original coverage, Gnarbox 2.0 SSD is a rugged storage solution that works hand-in-hand with a collection of apps to make it easy to import, sort, edit and export multimedia content while on the go. As photographers and videographers, there comes a time when we’re about to set off on a trip, suitcase at that sit-on-to-zip capacity, where we have to wonder if we really need to bring a laptop. The Gnarbox proposes a solution between dragging a laptop somewhere we’d rather not and running into a “card full” warning with nowhere to dump the images or footage. With the promise of being just as indestructible as a waterproof camera, it’s also perfect for those more extreme adventures, as we discovered during our Gnarbox review. While the larger ingest was part user failure, part wishlist items, the smaller sessions have been flawless. The GNARBOX is a rugged hard drive that aims to not only provide a storage option for your photos, but aims to do it while you’re still in the field…and get this: without a computer. Yes, you heard that right. I’m confident it can happen, and it when it does, it’s going to be an absolute, total game changer for my workflow process.

As it boots up, you’ll see a loading bar below the GNARBOX logo, and once it’s ready, you’ll be able to ingest your card via the apps on your phone or tablet. The enclosure is relatively light and compact with dimensions of 70mm x 116mm x 27mm and a total weight of just 185g. The process of updating the firmware is pretty straightforward, but you need to make sure that you follow the exact steps as outlined in this guide. I skipped the process initially and got confused a little, until I realized that I had to connect to both my WiFi and the device to get the process going. If you do not update, you might not be able to perform specific functions within the mobile apps, so keep that in mind. Overview, Build Quality and Handling All this basically means that the image editing capabilities of the software are quite limited. For me, the software is way too basic. In addition, I did not like editing images while looking at a pretty small thumbnail – I wish there was a way to change the orientation of the software to be able to take advantage of more screen space. In fact, the software only works in portrait mode and it has a number of bugs with non-standard resolutions (more on bugs below). Video Editing They took me up on the challenge, and I whole heartedly believed I would wind up finding a way to unintentionally take this hard drive down.If you want to bypass the Gnarbox completely and only use it to copy files from your memory card to an external storage device, you can do that too.
