About this deal

Are you surprised by any of the answers? Perhaps your children could try to guess some of the most-used words in English. So once a child has learned to say a few basic words, it’s time for us to start expanding their vocabulary to include a range of words. When we start little ones off with language we normally teach them simple nouns, names, places or things… The words on the Fry list span a vast vocabulary, from straightforward nouns like "the" and "and" to more intricate concepts like "information" and "communication." The Fry list seeks to provide kids with the vocabulary they need to recognize and read proficiently by including a wide variety of terms. Questions also vary in form and content. Whilst adding plenty of variety for children, they approach the topic in a number of ways to target different aspects, such as memory, spelling and children's ability to form clear sentences.

Sight words appear frequently in written text and do not always follow regular phonetic patterns. They are necessary for improving reading fluency and comprehension. The Letters and Sounds assessment taken in Year 1 of UK Primary Education tests both children's level of phonic knowledge and their ability to read unseen words based on the sounds they already know. Each high-frequency word has an interactive mat which KS1 children can complete with support or independently. The Dolch sight word list, on the other hand, focuses on commonly used words that are not immediately decodable by phonics. Dr. Dolch carefully selected terms that featured regularly in children's literature, such as fundamental pronouns, prepositions, adverbs, conjunctions, and a selection of common nouns. He originally had 220 terms on his list, broken down by grade level. Later, Dolch added an additional 95 nouns to the list. Since then, many American primary schools have adopted the Dolch sight word list. What is The Difference Between Fry and Dolch Sight Words?

100 high-frequency key words

Teaching language to a child is super important… it’s how they communicate and learn to understand others. For a child, learning their first words… is like putting up the scaffolding of a house… something that holds the house up whilst the rest is being built upon over time.

Understanding more words can also spur children to read more. They'll be able to recognise a wider number and variety of words and delve further into the fantastic world of authors and fictional characters. Playing games with sight words can make learning enjoyable and engaging. Bingo, Memory, Go Fish, and Sight Word Scavenger Hunt are a few of the most well-liked games. These games reinforce sight word recognition through repetition in addition to making learning fun. Another fun way to help your child to learn these high frequency words is to choose a handful of the words and encourage them to make a silly sentence which contains as many of them as possible!

Commonly kids learn to start speaking aged 12 months, however, we can start teaching them to communicate within the first few days of their lives… According to the Letters and Sounds Phonics scheme, here are the top 10 highest frequency words in English: He examined a big body of text and determined the most prevalent words, which account for 90% of words used in reading and writing on a daily basis. The outcome was the 1,000-word Fry sight word list, which is organized according to frequency.
