About this deal

For testing, I took the drone out for a shakedown flight in my yard but didn't get to do too much with it in my small suburban lot. Thankfully, I also have access to a big private farm and woods, with some walking trails through a canopy of trees and plenty of objects to navigate around. This environment let me open up the throttle and experience the thrill of crashing (a couple of times) without the worry of harming another person. If you live in a small lot, a crowded development, or an urban apartment, the Avata has less appeal. But if you've got some acreage or often find yourself in interesting places that also happen to be far away from other people, you can have some fun with the little radio-controlled flyer. The 18-minute battery is exposed during flight, and only takes a few seconds to swap out in the field

DJI Avata is compatible with DJI Goggles 2, DJI Goggles Integra, DJI FPV Goggles V2, DJI FPV Remote Controller 2, DJI RC Motion 2, and the DJI Motion Controller. To fly safely in this manner, you really need a space that's free and clear of other humans. If you fly the Avata into a tree, the worst you have to deal with is a broken drone. In its zippy 31mph Sports flight mode, the drone could do some real damage if you hit a person, however. I also expect shattered glass or a broken windshield if you run into a building or car. Needless to say, you shouldn't bring this drone to a public park.Does not come with a charger. You can use your own USB-C charger. It is recommended to use the DJI 65W Portable Charger (sold separately), DJI 65W Car Charger (sold separately), or other USB PD chargers. Protective covers keep dust and debris off of the eyepieces when the Goggles 2 aren't in use (Credit: Jim Fisher) If FPV flyers want the highest quality video, they usually strap an action camera to their machines, making them even more challenging to fly. Critically, the transmission bandwidth is still up to 50Mbps, so it’s a balance between resolution and framerate, with the new Goggles 2 going for resolution over frames-per-second.

The Avata has a useful amount of internal storage, about 20GB, which is enough to hold around 20 minutes of 4K60 footage. The device's single microSD slot supports cards up to 256GB. Both the card slot and USB-C port (for offloading from internal storage) sit within a propeller guard, though, so you need dextrous fingers to get at them. What’s slightly odd about the Goggles 2 is that, in most regards, they are superior to the Goggles V2, but not in every respect. The Avata has a nose-mounted camera for both FPV viewing and video capture. The lens has a wide view of 12mm in full-frame terms, and it’s a Type 1/1.7-inch with an F2.8 lens and boasts 64% more surface area to capture light than the ½.3-inch sensor of its predecessor. A bigger sensor means better low-light condition photos, but it also provides an improved dynamic range if you choose to shoot in D-Cinelike. DJI Goggles Integra adopt DJI's flagship O3+ video transmission, which can achieve full HD and low-latency video transmission.Enjoy a totally immersive, user-friendly flight experience with stunningly immersive HD resolution and intuitive flight control. Does not come with a standard controller, only motion controller. DJI Avata is also compatible with DJI FPV Remote Controller The 18-minute battery is exposed during flight, and only takes a few seconds to swap out in the field (Credit: Jim Fisher) Using the DJI FPV Remote Controller 2, as we did on many of our flights, is more intuitive for experienced drone pilots. When combined with the excellent view provided by the Goggles 2 and the agility of the Avata, it provided for easy precision flying and a high degree of exhilaration as we cruised low to the ground or between tree tops. In short, flying the Avata is a blast.

The experience of flying your drone first-person is mind-blowing. You actually feel like an eagle, and the learning curve is non-existent, taking no more than a few minutes to get used to the controls before I was whizzing through the air. Thanks to the Motion Controller we mentioned earlier, it’s also effortless to manoeuvre. Where the FPV topped out at an impressive 87mph (140 kph) in 'Manual' mode, the Avata is limited to just 27m/s or 60mph (97.2 kph). The DJI FPV flew at this speed in 'Sport' mode, so the Avata is significantly slower. It also doesn’t come with a USB-C charger, so you need to have one that can output at least 30W if you wish to charge the batteries rapidly.

More About Speed Than Cinema

Tested in an outdoor open environment without interference. The video transmission latency varies with different goggles. DJI FPV Goggles V2 can achieve video transmission of up to 810p. When you use DJI FPV Goggles V2 with the 810p/120fps video transmission, the lowest video transmission latency is less than 28 ms. To control the limited interface, the Goggles 2 has a touchpad on the right-hand side that can be used to make adjustments to the controls, capture quality and other settings. This not only allows for greater sensitivity in lower light conditions but also provides greater dynamic range when grading the footage in post-production.

Diopter adjustment function, wireless streaming function, dot matrix display, speaker, and 3.5mm audio port have been removed.

Confined Space Inspection

DJI Avata only supports downward obstacle sensing when used with DJI FPV Remote Controller 2, or DJI RC Motion 2/DJI Motion Controller in N Mode and S Mode. FCC: United States, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Chile, Colombia, Puerto Rico, and other regions.
