Coraline (Blu-ray Disc, 2009, 2-Disc Set, Collectors Edition

There are no surprises or twists in the plot (it's all very familiar ground, in fact), but 'Coraline' is nonetheless a loving tribute to the art of filmmaking itself. We're not watching the story as much as musing and gawking at the beautiful artistry that went into blending the charming and delightful with the creepy and frightful. There is such a great amount of attention placed on the details that it becomes almost trance-like, and it all works to enhance the narrative. We don't need anyone to explain that Coraline's parents are busy. They just are. We learn more about the downstairs women by looking at pictures and their collection of taxidermied Scottish Terriers. And watching the world of her Other Mother change appearance is scarier than requiring an explanation for her existence. Porting over the same set of bonus features from previous releases, the offering remains of entertaining interest for adults and animation lovers.

The Ex-Lois Lane, Teri Hatcher, supplies the talent for mother and other mother, channelling her own maternal instincts for the harassed, hardworking but loving mother and mixes Susan Delfino with deeper scheming and malevolence for other mother – and there are real differences even in the same voice. This added with the animation of the puppet, especially the changing costumes to express the far more arachnid aspect of other mother, and you have a very sinister character. Father and other father are voiced by John Hodgman who has one of those silky, trusting voices. This is necessary for when other father is being controlled, he is still full of the sympathy needed to express the concern for Coraline, the outer body may be a bloated vision of horror, but that voice still wins our hearts.

Wybie, a character invented purely for the film and voiced by Robert Bailey Jr. manages to supply a deal of sympathy for what is essentially just an expositional character, although his presence in the other world, I felt, was far more sensitive – something about the mime, I guess. The story is about a young girl named Coraline who moves with her family to a small town and discovers a parallel universe behind a secret door in their new house. The caveat here is that while the alternate universe is quite fun and zany, there's a sinister and evil entity lurking in the shadows that causes Coraline to come to terms with her lot in life and make amends with her family.
