Natural experiment: Another name for a natural experiment is a quasi-experiment. In this type of experiment, the researcher does not directly control the independent variable, plus there may be other variables at play. Here, the goal is establishing a correlation between the independent and dependent variable. For example, in the formation of new elements a scientist hypothesizes that a certain collision between particles creates a new atom. But, other outcomes may be possible. Or, perhaps only decay products are observed that indicate the element, and not the new atom itself. Many fields of science rely on natural experiments, since controlled experiments aren’t always possible. In September 2014, in an interview published in The Guardian, Mantel said she had fantasised about the murder of the British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in 1983, and fictionalised the event in a short story called "The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher: 6 August 1983". Allies of Thatcher called for a police investigation, to which Mantel responded: "Bringing in the police for an investigation was beyond anything I could have planned or hoped for, because it immediately exposes them to ridicule." Each time Mantel publishes a novel, the critical reception toasts her debt to Muriel Spark: the not always kindly wit, the observant eye that never sleeps, the reminders to bar the door at all times against the evil figure who might enter, as a teenager or a rogue priest - or as the two-foot-high, one-foot-wide devil that permeated Mantel's girlish body in the garden in Derbyshire, as described in Giving Up the Ghost, an experience that still provokes alarm on her face when it is mentioned.
