Show me the videographer who uses all 32 GB of recording space on one project and I will show you my honest amazement (which may not mean much to you, but for me is harder to come by these days). Adjusting the input volume involves using actual knobs, which gives a nice, tactile feel. Navigating through the menu is easy, but a little strange with the button that is provided. Need some recording device to connect to our Yamaha CL5. was easy configuration to connect and sound was perfectly recorded.The size of the H4n makes it handy without being too big or too small. The transport buttons are large enough for big fingers. The H4n Pro features high performance, low-noise mic preamps with recording resolutions up to 24-bit/96 kHz. The improved noise floor (-120 dBu EIN) captures audio at lower volumes with less noise and fewer artifacts. USB Audio Interface The H4n Pro can capture audio in both MP3 and WAV file formats. Monitoring audio levels from various miss as well as the ability to be used as an audio interface is a great tool. The H4n Pro can handle up to 140dB SPL, which makes it perfect for recording concerts, from a quiet chamber quartet to an ear-bludgeoning metal band. Using the H4n Pro's built-in XY mics (or external ones), Stereo mode is great for capturing acoustic instruments, dialogue, live performances, and more — covering a broad stereo spectrum while capturing clear, defined sound sources in the center. You can change the angle of the two unidirectional condenser mics from 120 to 90 degrees for a wider or more tightly focused image. Plus, Zoom has included an onboard M-S decoder for mid-side recording with external mics, which lets you adjust the width of the stereo image in post production. In 4-channel mode, you can record with the built-in mics and two external inputs simultaneously, adding lively room ambience to a stereo board mix. comparable with a 302 or 663 sound devices : not really but it’s not in the same price range, superior to Tascam DR 40 etc - yes definitelyReally impressive sound results in terms of just how much detail, clarity, dynamic range and frequency range there is. Low bass, crisp lower-mids, smooth upper-mids and highs. For want of a better term, what you hear with your ears when recording is more or less what you get on this Zoom. That said, I think it'll take a lot of practice to get the field recordings I'm looking for. Upon advice of a seasoned Zoom-user friend of mine, I used a pair of earbuds to monitor any wind noise as this can ruin a recording, but I found that on a fairly still day there was extremely low noise and, with the record level set at 80% there was no clipping - although it wasn't a loud environment. I made sure to test this as far away from any roads as possible, not easy as I live in a city where traffic noise is everywhere.

Professional Grade Preamps H5 is very handy and great quality. It comes with everything you need to start right out of the box, even batteries and an SD card. Pre-Record: Capture two seconds* of audio before you hit RECORD with the Pre-Record function and never miss the start of a great take. (*One second when recording at 96 kHz/sec or working 4CH mode.) There's plenty more on offer too, from compressors and low‑cut filters, to guitar amp and cabinet emulations (not the most authentic out there, but certainly passable for demo purposes), and distortion and delay‑based effects. I am really quite impressed with this little unit. Not only does it have a solid look/feel, the size is reasonable, and the resulting sound/recordings are well within my expectations.

Auto-Record: The Auto-Record and Auto-Stop functions allow the H4n Pro to automatically start and stop recording according to your designated levels. Stereo Mode: Stereo Mode can be used with the built-in X/Y microphones or external mics, and is convenient for recording live performances, acoustic instruments, and more. With the mics set at 90 degrees (can be twisted to 120 degrees for wider field) it gave great stereo imaging and a sense of space, albeit with an occasionally strange telescoping effect of far away things sounding near. Whether it’s remembering to charge them, bring spares, or the hidden monetary (and environmental) cost of the disposable kind, batteries can be a pain in the butt. If there’s one area the H5 beats the H4n Pro senseless, it’s in the battery. The preamps are surprisingly clear and quiet, I tried them with external condenser microphones - Rode NT2000 large diaphragm and T.Bone EM 9900 shotgun - both worked great for their own purposes.

For so many years I was just using a long cable with a solo mic attached to my camera but with this one is just so much better to have it station closer to my subject and get better audio and then just sync it on post or record straight to the video. Channel Mode: 4-Channel Mode records with the built-in X/Y mics and two external inputs to capture live room sound and a stereo board feed at the same time. Audio was super clear, the battery lasted for the entire session (better part of a day on and off), and it was super easy to carry around. Can't wait to try it out on some other projects.
