You’re close! The last step to play Steam games with a Gamecube controller is placing the x360ce files into the game folder. When Super Smash Bros. Brawllaunched, Nintendo released an adapter to support up to four GameCube controllers on Wii U. The Nintendo Switch received the same treatment when Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launched in late 2018. When I set the adapter to "Wii U"-mode (with Zadig drivers running and x360ce properly detecting the controller), Steam still detects the controller, but no button is mapped to any function (i.e. list in above screenshot doesn't contain any mapped buttons).
