Garry falls victim to the Blair-Thing in the final showdown, who sinks his fingers into his face and is later seen dragging a misshapen Garry into the darkness. His distorted appearance would appear to indicate he is in the process of being assimilated. 8. Nauls Hogan, David J. (November–December 1982). "Cinefantastique - Contents". Cinefantastique . The creature exists in contrast to the world it inhabits, being whimsical, purposeless, out-of-scale and apparently meaningless - all things that the bureaucracy cannot comprehend, and so it is not worthy of any attention. Being a curiosity is only effective if the populace is curious, and they aren’t, being always “too busy” doing more important things. Nauls is never killed or assimilated on screen, with the character instead shown walking off into the darkness having become distracted by something off-screen. However, the ambiguous nature of his fate was more a happy accident. The plan was originally to include a scene showing him being assimilated but Carpenter simply ran out of budget and time. 9. The Thing by Alan Dean Foster | Goodreads

While The Thing was not initially successful, it was able to find new audiences and appreciation on home video, and later on television. [107] Sidney Sheinberg edited a version of the film for network television broadcast, which added narration and a different ending, where the Thing imitates a dog and escapes the ruined camp. Carpenter disowned this version, and theorized that Sheinberg had been mad at him for not taking his creative ideas on board for the theatrical cut. [108] [109] [110]McLane, Marie (March 8, 2013).
