About this deal

In 2017, Hull UK City of Culture commissioned a community engagement project, called Land of Green Ginger. It was presented in the form of a series of Acts of Wanton Wonder, united under an overarching narrative. The projects were developed and delivered with artists who worked both independently and in collaboration to bring new kinds of art and culture into the neighbourhoods outside the city centre. Act I was 7 Alleys, Act II was The Golden Nose of Green Ginger, Act III The Longhill Burn, Act IV Re-Rediffusions Voice Park, Act V Micropolis by Davy and Kristin McGuire and Act VI Land of Green Ginger Unleashed. I cannot say for how long the first or second editions remained in print. But in 1958, nearly twenty years after its first publication, the story was presented as an episode in the first season of Shirley Temple's Storybook, a television series which dramatized mostly familiar fairy tales. Langley himself wrote the teleplay. A series of companion print volumes was published by Random House, and The Land of Green Ginger appears in the first of these (again from 1958). It is illustrated by William Bolin. Didn't have time to visit the actual pub other than to see the Smallest Window in the World, perhaps without the wall plaque you could be forgiven for missing it. It's in the wall to the left of the entrance on the street called "Land... of Green Ginger" To be offered such gifts of fortune, to seek Commercial Lane and to find – the day before Christmas Eve and by lamplight too – The Land of Green Ginger, dark, narrow, mysterious road to Heaven, to Fairy Land, to anywhere, anywhere, even to South Africa, which was the goal of all men’s longing, the place where Father lived in a rondavel, the place…

Prince Abu Ali and Silverbud united at last as illustrated by Ardizzone. The Land of Green Ginger (author’s copy)In the land of Green Ginger there is a town called Marmalade, which is exclusively inhabited by guinea-pigs. However, my process for weeding a sadly-neglected book like this is to read at least some of it. Plus I love Edward Ardizzone's illustration style. LP recording of Langley's recitation (identical to broadcast?) issued by Pacific Radio Records to great response The original George Hotel was built on Whitefriargate round the corner. At the rear of it was the courtyard accessed only through a gatehouse on the Land of Green Ginger. The original Whitefriargate building is now long-gone and what remains is the gatehouse that we know as The George Hotel.

Chapter the First, Which Explains How, Why, When and Where There Was Ever Any Problem in the First Place

One day, perhaps, when she was a wealthy farmer, and the children had left school, they would sell the tumble-down old place and wave farewell to the dark circle of heather, and set off on their travels…” I love Winifred Holtby's writing, and I love the covers of the new Virago editions of her work so much that I pounced on a bargain copy of The Land of Green Ginger, even though I already owned the original green VMC edition. Over 1500 local people participated in Land of Green Ginger in a variety of roles including performing, hosting, stewarding and invigilating. Land of Green Ginger Unleashed alone was supported by an incredible 200 participants and nearly 900 hours of rehearsal.Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence

Out of the several we came across this one was the standout for me, a great selection of real ales, all kept well and at reasonable prices,... The Abbeydale & Bradfield Brewery options where particularly pleasing on the taste buds. This may be a pointless review. The copy I have is an original 1937 edition which, so far as I know, is the only one to contain the beautiful original colour illustrations by the author.
