Ser Davos Seaworth, a smuggler turned knight in the service of King Stannis Baratheon, often called the Onion Knight. Stannis Baratheon, publicizing the claim that Joffrey and his siblings are bastards, claims the throne as Robert's eldest brother and therefore heir. He is supported by Melisandre, a foreign priestess who believes Stannis a prophesied messianic figure. Renly is supported by the wealthy Lord Mace Tyrell, and has married Mace's daughter Margaery. Robb's mother Catelyn Stark meets with Renly and Stannis to discuss an alliance against Joffrey's family, the Lannisters, but she is unable to reach an agreement with them. Melisandre uses magic to send a shadow to assassinate Renly in the middle of the night, and Stannis besieges Storm’s End, Renly’s castle; after witnessing Renly's death, Catelyn and Renly's bodyguard, Brienne of Tarth, flee the scene. Daenerys becomes the Khaleesi and mother of dragons. Jon, the lone bastard, becomes the right hand of Lord Mormont, commander of the Night’s Watch. One of the all-time classic fantasy series, right up there with The Belgariad and The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, and, yes, with The Lord of the Rings.’ Theon Greyjoy appeared as a promising figure with an air of independent arrogance and an internal war between the practices of his birth-father (Dalon Greyjoy) and his foster-father (Eddard Stark), somehow entangled with naivety and immaturity. The novel almost revels in the disintegration of his personality. There was a rich use of figures of speech throughout ‘A Clash of Kings.’From metaphors to similes, personification, hyperbole, and paradoxes, the rich use of figurative language made the story profoundly realistic. Martin’s expert use of figures of speech, lore, and history to compare the fictional world with the real made his story a reflection of reality. Closer at hand, it was the trees that ruled. To south and east the wood went on as far as Jon could see, a vast tangle of root and limb painted in a thousand shades of green, with here and there a patch of red where a weirwood shouldered through the pines and sentinels, or a blush of yellow where some broadleafs had begun to turn. When the wind blew, he could hear the creak and groan of branches older than he was. A thousand leaves fluttered, and for a moment the forest seemed a deep green sea, storm- tossed and heaving, eternal and unknowable. This section is spoiler free, so I can’t really talk about what happened in more detail than that! All you need to know is that continuing with the story is worth it – it’s exciting, bloody, brutal, and engaging.
