About this deal

Over 2-decades earlier, Mish and Leo were best friends and they were celebrating a sweet 16 birthday. But what happened that night would forever change them. Ellie thought she had left her haunting past behind her, but now her secrets are threatening to be revealed. The advice, the words of wisdom were so precious. He could be your friend yet he can also be the protective figure, someone you can rely on eyes closed. I think what really made me connect with Jordan is how well Douglas handled this character's development. There's glimpses into a teenage girl; enough to make you remember her age. But at the same time, she's not sheltered and naive. This is a woman that knows what she wants. She's not shy and afraid to go after it. She's solid. She's mature beyond her years. But yet she's still a young woman. I knew the moment his eyes were on me tonight when he walked in and I was at the juke box. I could see him out of the corner of my eye when I walked to the bar, too, and I know that look. Possessive." Melissa grew up in Manila and moved to San Francisco with her family, where she graduated high school salutatorian from The Convent of the Sacred Heart. She majored in art history and English at Columbia University (and minored in nightclubs and shopping!).

A lot of the story is just built up for the death, but when it comes, it seems so irrelevant to everything else going on with neighborhood lawsuits, plagiarism, etc. I really didn’t care. I also thought some of the wording was either typos or just odd: “and he’d proposed and promised this gorgeous thing anything she wanted” (9). Custom keepsake Letter Train, personalised bag,Wooden Toy Train, Christening Train,First Birthday gift, First Set, Geburtstagszug,1st train I would call this more of a mystery than a thriller for it having multiple POVs and time periods that are intended to set up the “unexpected” twist (although frequent readers of the domestic “thriller” genre would expect). But it isn’t really a thriller, so if you’re going to be disappointed that it isn’t just skip it. You’ve always watched me, haven’t you? Always wanted to have your fun with me.” I falter, knowing what she says is true. I’ve wanted her since the first time I saw her. “It’s okay,” she whispers. “I always knew, and I always liked it. Keep watching me, Mr. Lawson.” Ellie de Florent-Stinson is about to celebrate her 40th Birthday. And it will be the party that spears no indulgence. This soiree is not only for her celebration, but a showcase to the rich and famous that she has entered their world. To prove to herself she has shed the past of the family's trailer, the felon father and the absentee mother. This was supposed to be a buddy read with my friend, Deidra, but the book was annoying me-- and not in a "so bad it's fun" way, but in an "OMG NOT THIS SHIT AGAIN" sort of way, so I ended up jumping ship at 12% because I'm a bad friend. But life's too short to read bad books. I always came across of this grumpy, broody older men who happen to be so control freak, yes I am not likely to be indifferent towards them.

I was so excited when they moved in because draaaaaama. And there is definitely plenty of drama and angst.Birthday Girl is a must read for all forbidden romance lovers and those who enjoy their taboo stories. I know without a shadow of a doubt that this is one story I will never forget. I really wanted to like this book; the premise was great, the characters are clever, there's just the right amount of suspense. Ultimately though, The Birthday Girl was just meh. The characters' pasts and presents are so different, it's astonishing to think only 20-something years had past and that much had changed. Then there's the birthday party, for so much to happen in one evening, for everyone to be there, was unbelievable. I went from intrigued and really captivated, to wanting to skim, bored by the mixed in drama that took away from the mystery. In particular, there is one scene that involved papers being served and I just rolled my eyes. Yes, life is dramatic and yes this is a fiction, but this was a stretch on how life events unfold. Love love love Pike. Oh mama! Now that's a drool worthy daddy! And ofc our sassy bitch Jordan have my respect more than any other heroines. Jordan has nowhere else to go when her boyfriend offers to let her move in with him and his dad. Working a dead-end job, with her relationship sputtering, she jumps at the opportunity, expecting to help out around the house in exchange. What she doesn’t anticipate is for her heart to race every time Pike pulls into the driveway, or to burn when their eyes meet over the breakfast table. He’s kind and listens to her and protects her in a way no man ever has before. Her sister once told her there are no good men, and if you find one, he’s probably unavailable. Only Pike isn’t the unavailable one…she is.

Birthday Girl by Penelope Douglas | Goodreads

The main thing I love about Penelope Douglas’s book is that she doesn’t just write sex scenes for the sake of it. She doesn’t just write them to fill in the gaps, they are a big part of the story and have a meaning. The premise for The Birthday Girl is very bland and it only gets blander as you start to read. The thing is, it did have the potential to be a good story of a woman who intends to keep her skeletons in the closet and does not want anyone to know about her past that could change their view on her. Especially if her secrets are horrifying. There is some angst in the last third of the book when Jordan and Pike start seeing each other (because it took that long for that to happen), but I found it to be very bearable. It probably helped that Jordan is a mature character and there is a lot of self-reflection going on with characters. The romance was lovely as well. It was a nice slow burn with plenty of tension. Told in two timelines - one in the past when she was a teenager living a completely different life. As a teenager she was poor and grew up in a trailer who shoplifted with her best friend to keep up with the fashions of the time. The other takes place in the present during her lavish birthday party in Palm Springs. As the days go by, though, it’s becoming anything but easy. I have to stop my mind from drifting to her and stop holding my breath every time I bump into her in the house. I can’t touch her, and I shouldn’t want to. Okay let me get it straight - I'm looking for the suspense part 👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾. And this book doesn't satisfy the hunger I'm looking for in a story. 😭😭😭. Maybe I just want to feel something but I don't get it.
