About this deal

Secondary to the conversation about weight is anxiety and how it can play in to our fears about who we are and how the world looks at us. Miss Starling has a way with words; words to mold, heal, and embrace your heart. Whether you are dealing with the loss of a love, or trying to love yourself, Starling’s pure poetry brings you to a place of serenity and understanding just as if she is there in the room telling you directly. Starling has a way of teaching us to forgive ourselves and grow to love ourselves rather than focus primarily on the negative. Her debut poetry book is a strong entrance and I look forward to more of her work. Libby has been telling the absolute truth since her mama told her, “Tell the truth and shame the devil.” When everyone gets mad at her, she realises there is a right way to tell the truth.

Ashley clapped her hands as the fridge hummed to life and she turned to me, taking the Universal Studios picture out of my hand. This book is, and I really cannot emphasize this enough, wild. You may think you know what you're getting into in a memoir about someone who was raised to be honest above all else, but you do not. Leviton will continue to surprise you through the whole story with the things he thinks and says. This is not just two parents who say, "Always tell the truth." Leviton emulates his father, one of those men who uses truthtelling as a weapon and a shield, always directing negative barbs at everyone else, never accepting anything negative about himself, always turning the conversation around on you when it gets difficult or uncomfortable for him. You know versions of That Guy, but believe me, you have never seen one who goes quite to the level of Leviton's father, who deserves to be in the pantheon of Bad Memoir Dads. (I cannot take the ones who are too bad, this is a comfortable level of bad for me, no physical abuse.)I loved Martin's debut--it was such a light, fun, and comical contemporary! It was sweet, funny, and a total blast to read.

This book has wit and did make me laugh many times. I listened to this through audio 🎧. That the author appears to have grown up and is ok is good news to report. His parents seem very nice, but believe in Absolute Total Honesty. Told in an impressively lighthearted but eloquent manner, the author places honesty under the microscope and dissects and scrutinizes it by asking essential questions. Are white lies really necessary? Would it be best to be blunt? What happens when we sugar coat things? What happens when we don't? All these curiosities are answered in as Leviton describes in great detail his unorthodox relationship with his parents and how what they've ingrained in him his whole life seems to be at the root of his shortcomings. Leviton tells his story with flair. He has an interesting story to relate and he has enough perspective on it to make it entertaining. Savvy is in High School & we also get to follow her life outside her home which balances out against her home life. Savvy has an amazing best friend who she enjoys spending time with. She’s also a math tutor on the side but her real passion is journalism. There’s a a really caring teacher who encourages her not to drop out of working on the school’s paper & it leads to the sub-plot of this book. We see Savvy uncovering some under the table dealings with one of the athletic departments. We also see her tutoring turn into something more than & I cannot tell you the number of times I found myself smiling for SavvyPro: I really liked the way Martin challenged the reality weight loss industry. Those shows have created unreasonable standards and expectations for people, and it was an interesting way to explore healthy/unhealthy weight loss as well as the impossible beauty standards that exist. Reading this book was like reading my own thoughts most of the time. Sometimes poetry is just what one needs to reflect on their thoughts and emotions and to remember that in the end you're not alone. On the other hand I think Savannah deserved way better than a guy who ended up being afraid of his feelings for her. The scene that took place after he bailed on homecoming where he tells her how he's "never felt this way about anyone before" did not impress me. Savannah is freaking awesome and she put her feelings on the line and he really let her down. I think it's a bad cop out that a lot of guys use, and while in the end George was sincere, he still made her feel like he was playing around with her feelings and that is never okay.

She held me by my shoulders and forced me to look into her eyes. “You’re stronger than you know. Don’t you ever forget that, no matter how tough things might get. And, it’s not like I’m across the country. I’m only a few hours away if you ever need me.” Ron is a sought after speaker, a regular contributor to Harvard Business Review, Forbes, and author/co-author of eight books. You can watch his Speaker Reel here. The last picture was of Ashley, my dad, and me. We were in Hollywood doing a tour of Universal Studios because Ashley had just caught her movie bug. She was probably twelve, making me eleven. We posed in front of the Gilmore Girls town of Stars Hollow and we were laughing our heads off. Most likely, Dad let out a fake fart noise right before the count of three, and we lost it. On the other side of the camera I could imagine Mom’s disapproving face. Mom always refused to be in the pictures. That being said, I still think Martin did not do nearly enough examination on any of the major themes. It made it feel like Martin wasn't taking the topics seriously, and I wish this book was longer and more drawn out. Wow, I enjoyed To Be Honest so much more than expected. This book had #ownvoices fat representation, excellent family dynamics, and a swoonworthy romance. It gave me everything I enjoy in a YA contemporary. Plus, it was thoughtfully done and deceptively deep, based on the brightly-colored cover. He only pointed out that she chooses to go to camp and then complains about it,' I said. 'He didn't say anything inaccurate.' Also, THE ROMANCE. I loved it. Savannah and George’s banter was adorable, and I love that so much of their relationship was formed when Savannah tutored him in math (YAY for girls in STEM! and for boys who aren’t assholes about girls being better at them in STEM fields!). Plus, George was a band nerd. Be still, high-school-Madalyn’s heart. All of Savannah’s fear about entering into a relationship/developing a crush/etc. felt SO true to my own experiences. To Be Honest explores four key factors that affect honesty: Honesty in Identity, Justice in Accountability, Transparency in Governance, and Unity between Groups. Contemplating the section titles alone from a personal context or applied to any of the major issues of the day is thought-provoking and moving. Ron weaves years of research, insights, interviews, and stories (including his own) to create something much more than a book. Combined with the Key Takeaways, extensive endnotes, and Get Busy sections (homework), TBH is a robust mental and actionable workshop. To Be Honest really is an enticing coming-of-age novel that explores all aspects of the protagonist's life, with a heavy emphasis on the conversation of body positivity and familial dynamics. That being said, Savvy really does love her mom & since it’s just the two of them home now, she tries her hardest to not cause friction or let her mom’s comments get to her. We follow their relationship & the very real fights that take place leading to days of silence. Maggie Ann Martin also did a A+ job of showing us Savvy’s mom & her battle with body image. I felt terrible for her mom because you know she’s a good mom but life’s curve ball really threw her off & her self esteem really took a hit. I wanted so badly to see her mom get the help she so desperately needed & be a positive role model for Savvy.

Pro: The fat rep was pretty great. Martin really touched on those things, which I think a lot of people, who have never been overweight are not aware of. Your jiggly bits being exposed and touching someone else, not being able to shop in the same store as your thin friend, being made to feel self-conscience when you eat in front of people, being thought of as invisible or "less than", because you don't fit the size-0 beauty standard. Mom brought up a single finger, her telltale sign that you were about to get into an argument, but then she put it down. Almost like she remembered that we were here to drop off her oldest daughter for her freshman year of college and now wouldn’t be the most convenient time for a fight. To be honest, I think Michael Leviton is an insufferable snob. I want to be as truthful as possible in this review, which I think Michael would appreciate. No one taught Leviton social norms when he was growing up, and adults cannot figure out how to explain them to a child this literal. Everyone tells him he's doing it wrong but they can never give him a good reason. So he continues into adulthood, someone who says everything he thinks, and who sees the world through a critical eye, where everyone else is "most people" who are willing to believe anything. Romance is part of the story, but the story doesn’t rely on it, It mainly moved around relations and hardships of a family. I’m not sure that it’s okay to generalize an entire group of people’s eating habits based on a fast-food chain that happens to mention their state,” I said.
