Natasha .... Oh, man. I don't know if I have ever disliked a character as much as I do her. Her reactions seemed very odd, laughable even, and didn't seem to match the situations. I am not sure if the character was supposed to come across as naive and vulnerable but I felt she was weak and moronic. Two traits I can't stand in a female lead. I would take bitchy Jen any day of the weak and I was kind of rooting for her to throat punch Natasha. A roller coaster ride with amazingly fleshed out characters. If you are tired of reading thrillers where you just can't understand a character's motivation, give this one a shot. You'll question the characters in the beginning, but as the book goes on, Jess Ryder explains them so well and makes you understand their motivations, their weaknesses, their strengths... everything about them. There's plenty of crazy situations in this one, and lots of surprises to keep you on your toes. Genres covered in this novel include Psychological Suspense, Women's Psychological Thriller, Domestic Thriller, Hard-Boiled Mystery, Crime, Domestic Suspense, Thriller & Mystery Adventures, International Mystery & Crime, Coming Of Age Fiction, Women's Psychological Fiction, Suspense Thriller, Thriller, Suspense, Psychological Thriller, Psychological Fiction, Women's Writers & Fiction, Psychological Literary Fiction, Thriller & Suspense Literary Fiction, Domestic Fiction, Crime, Thriller & Mystery Adventures, British Detective Stories and Mystery amongst others. Ex-Wife is a 1929 novel written by Ursula Parrott and reissued by McNally Editions in 2023 with an afterword by Marc Parrott, the author's son, and a foreword by Alissa Bennett, a writer for the Paris Review. A marriage built on secrets, lies, and pure craziness leads to the ultimate betrayal in The Ex-Wife. I loved how this psychological thriller kept me asking myself, “What is going on?” and racing towards the end to find out. The twists were surprising and kept me on edge as they were revealed. I felt a shot of adrenaline as each chapter ended and compelled me to keep reading (which I did). Several times I literally sat straight up in bed and asked myself, “Did that just happen?” Who doesn’t love a “gotcha” moment! This novel consists of 27 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case! I can get on board with a slow burn psych thriller but with The Ex-Wife I felt like I was still waiting for the match to catch fire. It seemed as if I was reading 2 different books and, quite frankly, they were both boring. This book kept me quite dizzy and I remained dizzy most of the way through with interludes of calmness, all in a good way. The authors skilfully craft a cast of well-described characters, each with secrets, adding complexity to the story. As Alice faces trial for the murder of Norah and her daughter's boyfriend, the plot takes numerous unexpected turns, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. The book opens with Alice on trial for the murder of her ex-husband’s fiancée & her daughter’s boyfriend. In court, her air is one of acceptance & it appears that the only unknown is how long the prison sentence will be. We are then thrown to six months previously & shown the torturous route to present day. A recently divorced wife is accused of murdering her young, pretty and seemingly perfect replacement. Things are complicated and the story weaves between the past and present with really unexpected and surprising twists along the way and the biggest and most surprising twist at the very end.

J. Cape & H. Smith [1929]; Grosset & Dunlap [1930]; New American Library [1989]; McNally Editions [2023]. Natasha can't drive. An adult woman in London who can't drive? I don't think so. Natasha's mother drives and has a car.Ex-Wife” depicted remarkable erotic freedom — “I think chastity, really, went out when birth control came in,” a more seasoned ex-wife named Lucia remarks — but abuse and violence is always lurking around the corner. Patricia is slut-shamed mercilessly by her husband, Pete, after she cheats on him — even though he’s cheated on her. They had a baby he was jealous of, who dies, and when Patricia gets pregnant again he beats her. Going to terminate the pregnancy, she wonders if she herself “might be turning up a corpse before sunset.” Later, she is raped, and considers suicide. I was originally drawn to this book by its gorgeous eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'A brand new psychological thriller that will keep you guessing till the end! Perfect for fans of Sue Watson, Nina Manning, Shalini Boland.' I am a huge fan of all three of Shalini Boland and Sue Watson so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Boldwood. I have yet to read a book published by Boldwood that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book). WOW!!! Sally Rigby and Amanda Ashby make an amazing crime writing duo! Combined those two created a unique, fresh, addictive, twisted and fast paced read in The-Ex Wife. Ex-Wife presented readers and critics with a new woman, one who was pursuing new vocational, economic, and romantic freedoms. She spent her days chasing a career, while her nights were a boozy smear of restaurants, speakeasies, and amorous encounters. She was exciting and discomfiting and morally questionable . . . But Ex-Wife, which is now being reissued (by McNally Editions) for the first time in more than thirty years, wasn’t the racy, frothy endorsement of cosmopolitan white women’s liberation that readers were primed to expect." What really happened to North's ex-wife? As Cross takes on this new cold case, he encounters an insurmountable obstacle: the body he's looking into has been cremated.

But modern New York is where the genre has reached its apotheosis, from Edith Wharton to Beyoncé and beyond. In this mostly upward and exuberant history, the writer Ursula Parrott has been largely (and sadly) omitted. Alice is envious of Norah, who is now married to her ex husband, Mark. And Norah now lives in the nice big house with no financial worries while Alice struggles to make it by being an author, though she hasn't written anything in a while. They share custody of their teen daughter, Cassie. A seemingly perfect marriage, secrets and lies, the Ex-Wife who won’t leave them alone, the husband and daughter who disappears and then what happens makes for one twisty entertaining read. Visit BookSleuth In a tale that is layer upon layer of secrets, lies and betrayal...and ultimately revenge, THE EX WIFE is an intense and addictive read from start to finish...until the disappointing end which I thought was something of a letdown, all things considered. But one thing is for certain...it will keep you guessing. The Ex-Wife is a fast paced psychological thriller with lots of twists and turns that kept me up late at night trying to figure out how and where it ends. Narrated in the past and present with two different POV’s Jess Ryder does a bang up job of building up suspense in this entertaining novel which I would definitely recommend. Alice once had it all—a perfect family complete with a rich husband, a beautiful house, and a daughter she adored. Then came Norah…

The writing is brilliantly sharp and perfectly paced. There is twist after twist after twist and just about everyone has got a secret in their past. While the characters may not be likeable, the story's intriguing plot and clever twists make it impossible to put down. The authors' ability to subvert expectations and keep the suspense building until the very end is commendable. The chapters are given to Anna, Natasha and Jennifer. At the beginning I was trying to keep up, but once my brain got into gear I was well away. Everything started to fall into place. Ex-Wife is every bit as engaging and thought-provoking as it was in 1929. The novel can be read as a period piece about the 1920s, the emergence of flappers and independent career women, but it is also an anatomy of a marriage and a divorce that takes a searing look at a conflicted woman . . . The novel’s passages on female friendship are as profound as Patricia’s efforts to become her own woman in the company of the men she desires."My life was perfect until she came along. Norah. Younger, prettier, and about to marry my own ex-husband, they are a walking cliche. I hate her. I hate them both. she's stolen everything from me - my husband, my life, my home - but I refuse to let her take Cassie, my beautiful daughter. Now I've discovered that Nora plans to have a baby of her own and that causes me no end of problems. She could destroy everything and reveal my deepest, darkest secrets. What I liked about this book is that I was never really sure what was going on or how things were going to play out. I was addicted for the first 50%, but then things fizzled out a bit. I figured out the first major twist but was surprised by some others. There were certain revelations that were a bit of a letdown. I also was quite intrigued by Sam’s character and wanted to know more about him. Les deux auteures emportent le lecteur dans un thriller-labyrinthe dans lequel on remonte le temps.
