About this deal

And then whispers start coming out about people who have gained more than they should have in the Bank's demise... And Gil starts to debate the whole ethos of journalism... Was he simply being used...? Political shenanigans abound in this tale of corruption money and murder and the writing is excellent, keeping you involved throughout and often on the edge of your seat.

Robert Peston Jewish News meets: Crash, bang, wallop, it’s Robert Peston

Gil, our journalist hero thinks his sister’s death in a bicycle accident may be murder and sets out to uncover the truth. I could have perhaps done with a bit less writing about pensions but the premise is sound, and sadly the political shenanigans seem all too plausible. I'm a big fan of Robert Peston and really enjoyed his first novel, The Whistleblower, so I was really pleased to be offered the chance to read the follow up, The Crash. Overall, not the best book ever written, not even the best political thriller ever written but an average one with a well known author. Without his name I doubt it would do so well.Authentic feeling (which I would expect considering the author) and clever it brings home everything you half guess about what may go on in the higher echelons of power, it is all scarily believable and highly addictive. This massive onslaught of work — two books and the podcast launch as well as his regular job — has led to “a completely mad and frenetic time” for Peston. His “Jewish New Year resolution”, he says, is “that next year I’m not taking on any big projects, I’m just going to concentrate on family and the people I love”. This was a decent political thriller, following what was essentially the 1997 election with a darker twist. Thought it did a good job of emphasising Tory scandal but wasn’t a fan of the portrayal of Blairites particularly, given it was coming from a political journalist. For those who follow politics there are some familiar characters to be found along the way. We also have the politics of the BBC and their hierarchy to contend with! All very familiar stuff , again if you are politically aware.

Jewish News holds our community together and keeps us connected. Like a synagogue, it’s where people turn to feel part of something bigger. It also proudly shows the rest of Britain the vibrancy and rich culture of modern Jewish life. Once she’s in the post, she starts to discover details about Jean-Luc’s death that disturb her. Addled by the drugs she’s taking to deal with her anxieties and grief, unable to sleep in the permanent night, she wonders who she can trust. “Something is very wrong here, I realise. No… worse. Someone is very wrong here.” From a slower start, this story certainly gains speed. I really liked this build-up and it fits in well with the election that is upcoming in the book. Time is of the essence and it is one that has been worked well. The crime genre is huge, and a protagonist can become involved in solving a murder in numerous ways. Being a police officer or PI makes sense, being an elderly lady or vicar less so, but authors still manage somehow – to remarkable success. Another easy option is a journalist. Their job is already to investigate so it makes sense that a roving crime reporter comes across a case of misjustice and wants to settle the score. Crime reporter on the beat. What? Robert Peston’s The Crash is about the Chief Finance Reporter at the BBC solving a murder, but it works. I think we might all agree that Mr Peston is an intelligent, clever man who knows what he is talking about? If so, perhaps he would care to explain to his readers why he chooses to dumb down such an intelligently written book as The Crash with an avalanche of totally unnecessary expletives, for example, 70 variations of the f-word?Election Day is looming and Gil is determined to find out the truth and try to get justice for Clare. The storyline gradually reveals the close ties between politicians, bankers and businesses where personal interest is their top priority.
