About this deal

With her previous two novels, The Familiars and The Foundling, Stacey Halls proved that she’s an author with a unique talent for writing engrossing and atmospheric historical fiction centered around female protagonists haunted by complicated pasts. With the bar set so high, it’s always a worry that the next book an author writes won’t live up to the early successes of its predecessors. Happily, that couldn’t be further from the truth with Mrs England, which opens with an intriguing flash-forward, before unravelling the events that lead Ruby to that moment.

Ruby is a Norland nurse with an impeccable reputation. She is sent to a new placement at an isolated family estate in the English countryside. She has an immediate connection with the four children and finds herself drawn into the mysterious relationship between her employers, Mr. and Mrs. England. Ruby becomes wrapped up in the mysterious happenings and questionable circumstances within the dark and eerie mansion.

Mrs England is the third novel by Stacey Halls. I’ve read both her previous works, The Familiars and The Foundling, and really enjoyed them both. I really like Stacey Halls’s style of writing so I was really excited to read Mrs England. Mrs England by Stacey Halls Review: Plot Halls has dedicated the novel to the people who work in our NHS, with thanks for their efforts. I find this particularly touching, as one of the more than a million NHS staff, albeit in a quiet administrative role, as opposed to the front line heroes who are literally saving lives during the Covid pandemic at personal risk, and will continue to do so.

The staff at Hardcastle House was not welcoming, and Ruby had to do many things she hadn't done in her first position. The authors writing is fantastic, very cleverly written. However they just delved too deep into the unimportant ‘fillers’ of the book and didn’t spend enough time talking about any of the interesting moments throughout.

My main criticism was that after all that build, I was let down by the ending. Suddenly everything happened all too fast and it was all over, and I was left feeling somewhat dissatisfied, and with the feeling that the main plot had all been rather too predictable.
