Wild carrot was reportedly used as a medicinal plantin ancient Rome. It was used as an aphrodisiac and in mixtures to help prevent poisoning. A Roman army physician namedPedaniusDioscordineswrote about both wild and cultivated forms of carrots in 65 B.C. He wrote that wild carrot could ward off reptiles and act as an aphrodisiac and diuretic. The cultivated forms were reported to be more palatable but less used for medicinal purposes. Because they are a cold weather, hardy crop, carrots are often the first thing to be planted. They can be planted 2-3 weeks before the last frost. Seeds should be planted shallowly, with just 1/2” of soil covering them. Plant them 1-2 inches apart, with 10 -12 inches between each row. Carrots have been a staple crop in the human diet for centuries! They’re nutritious, filling, and they’re easy to store for long periods of time, so it’s no wonder why they have such a rich history of cultivation. If you have the luxury of growing carrots without the presence of carrot rust flies, you may still be concerned with soil dwelling insects such as wireworms, which seem to be true lovers of carrots. They are so attracted to carrots, in fact, that a full-grown carrot makes a very good lure for wireworms. Just bury carrots or carrot pieces in several areas around the intended seedbed, and mark where you bury them. If wireworms are present, you can then dig up the carrot pieces and easily remove the wireworms from the bed, or at least go a long way to reducing their population. As mentioned above, one carrot plant will typically yield one carrot root, so if you’re thinking that you can plant a carrot root and produce a bunch of carrot offshoots (like potatoes) to harvest then you’ll be sorely disappointed. PLANTING: Sow from early spring to midsummer, ¾" apart , ¼–½" deep, in 2" wide band (about 16 pellets/ft.), or single rows 16–24" apart. For minimum soil compaction, use raised beds with 2 or 3 rows 16–24" apart, beds 5–6' on center. Sprinkle the soil surface to keep moist. Don't allow soil to crust before the emergence of seedlings which takes 1–3 weeks, depending on temperature and moisture. If necessary, thin young seedlings to ¾–2" apart, depending on type or root size desired. Keep weed-free by tine weeding and shallow hoeing. To prevent greening, cover exposed crowns.
