About this deal

A common mistake is for fire rated foam to be used in situations where intumescent sealant is better suited. When choosing an expanding foam, ensure you have the right product for your job. Expanding Foam Tape As it is non-combustible, it won’t catch fire and therefore won’t contribute to the spread of fire through a building.

Fire rated foam is usually pink in colour, to identify it as different from other types of expanding foam which don’t have the non-combustible qualities. When would you need fire rated foam? Buildings rely on a lot of large, solid components which can’t always connect fluidly. To ensure standards regarding insulation and moisture ingress are met, expanding foam can be used internally and externally to close small gaps.Expanding foam is a hugely versatile product that is incredibly useful for construction. Here are some of the circumstances where expanding foam should be considered. Filling Gaps Windows and doors are often the primary culprits for heat loss. Expanding foam can be used to fill the gaps around window and door installations, helping to reduce heat loss in these areas and improve overall insulation. Pipe Stabilising The only way to know for sure is to ask for certification that testing was carried out (and passed) on full sized installations rather than small scale test rigs. Have the tests behind the claims been carried out on a 2.8m high stud wall with expanding foam? With no evidence of the installer or products used it is un-likely that any Foam can be warranted by anyone and should be removed and replaced.

Kragelund first exhibited mirrors upcycled with expanding foam at a design fair in Copenhagen early last year, generating online buzz that “Danish design is cool again”. This was part of the Grenfell issue: Non compatible parts being put together because they were individually ok. Intumescent sealant, on the other hand, does not expand when applied, and only swells up when a fire has broken out and it reaches a certain temperature. In this circumstance, the sealant will then expand and seal a hole to reinstate a wall or door’s fire containment properties. How many of your projects are fitting fire doors into metal stud and plasterboard partitions? Are all metal stud walls the same? When pink foam has been used on a timber structure the results will bf foams in timber structure the results will be un achieve satisfactory fire-resistant results.Limited Durability: Fire stopping materials should be able to withstand the rigors of time and maintain their integrity over the long term. Pink foam, however, may degrade or deteriorate over time, compromising its ability to effectively stop the spread of fire. Some Foams can only provide fire resistance (surface spread of flames) and cannot provide any means of fire integrity depending on manufacturer. It is recommended by ASFP, BMTRADA, FIRAS, IFE that any installations of pink foam are removed and replaced with a true fire rated alternative due to it being difficult to trace the product without chemical composition testing.

Far better to insist that installation complies with the certificate’s installation instructions unless the installer can prove that their proposed method is better than that certified by the door manufacturer. Claims made in leaflets given out with boxes of expanding foam do not cut it. Fire rated foam is often misused due to poor understanding of its suitability. It is important to note that it should only be used to fill small linear gaps, gaps between a door frame and wall and small holes in fire walls. In sharing her process – later covered by design blogs – she no doubt contributed to foam mirrors’ outwards spiral. “Up until then it was a cool thing to be retweeted.” Expanding foam is a hugely useful tool for contractors with many potential uses. Primarily, it is great for closing gaps, helping to improve insulation for buildings. Here at Fastbuild, we sell a range of building supplies in the UK, including expanding foam.
