About this deal

Generally, after dying your leather you would want the dye to dry thoroughly before applying the leather finish. Also, you would want to consider putting on a type of finish that nourishes the leather quite a bit especially if the type of dye used makes the leather a bit dry or brittle. How can you tell if leather is finished or unfinished? Bonded leather is like the scrapple or hot dogs of leather; it is made up of leather scraps that are finely shredded and bonded together using polyurethane or latex onto a fiber mesh or sheet. The amount of leather in the actual mix can vary greatly (from 10%-90%), and thus affect the functional and aesthetic properties of the finished product. Water-based leather dyes don’t penetrate the leather as deeply than other dye types, and the colors aren’t usually as vibrant. However, they are generally less toxic than the other types. To the left is a photo showing a close up as before. This time you will notice where the Leather Binder has filled in some areas and the Flexifil others. VOCs), volatile organic compounds, are chemicals that can be toxic in large amounts or with prolonged exposure. Most leather dyes have VOCs. Some are available with a low VOC formula, making it a little safer and healthier when working with them. The Sun as a Leather Dye

Vegetable tanned leather is leather that is tanned with natural process using natural ingredients like bark of chestnut trees and by other tanneries that have a rich heritage of tanning hides. Vegetable tanning is an age-old process and relies on extended and complex process of soaking animal hides in vegetable tannin. Since, plant extracts are used for the tanning process hence the color of the finished leather has rich tones of natural browns. There is a lot of polish on the market but a few weeks ago I tried the Fiebing’s carnauba creme and I find it to be the best all-round polish that will give your leather products a very nice smell and supple especially after you have applied and given the leather a gentle buff. Some of the variations are due to the manufacturing process. Some are due to the finishing process. Others are based on the type of animal hide, and yet others are how the leather is cut. We’ll dive into each of them in more detail. The “5 Types of Leather” Before starting to wax your leather, you should ensure the applicator and the leather surface has no dust or dirt and after waxing, you should ensure the work is thoroughly dry before use.The major characteristic of using leather finishes is that they only come in at the final stages of the product making process. Types of Finishes Given to Leather B urnishing Waxing is also another type of finish for leather products. This is a process of applying either liquid or solid wax onto the surface of your leather article. You’d find that many professionals might prefer the liquid wax to the solid ones. A finished leather hide has a fairly large amount of leather to choose from when deciding where to cut from the use pieces on a project. Based on the area of the hide in relation to the animal’s body, some pieces will be a little higher quality and a little easier to work with. A polished finish is the most popular granite kitchen counter finish found in design. It features a shiny and smooth surface that brings out the best color, depth, and unique characteristics of the granite. The stone’s glossy, mirror-like look is a result of it being buffed with fine polishing pads, and the finish will make the stone appear slightly darker in color and richer in tone. Genuine leather can come from any layer of the hide, and undergoes treatment to the surface to provide a more uniform, “corrected”, appearance. It can be sanded or buffed to remove surface imperfections, then dyed (or spray painted) or stamped/embossed to give it a final surface appearance.

The most common today are cow, sheep, goat, and pig. Though, most any type can be obtained if needed for a project. Let’s explore some of the more common, and less common types of leather below. There are approximately 20 different leather finishes available. Only a small percentage will be used in the leather-related sectors. For example, aniline and hair-on-hide leather treatments are never used in automobiles but are widespread in upholstery and other home furnishings. It involved filling up a shallow pan with the leather dye. Then, the item to be dyed is pulled through the pan and dye. This exposes the leather to the dye in a consistent way as it’s pulled, resulting in an even application of the dye. A number two hide is allowed to have up to four holes or cuts, as long as they are located in a generally straight line on the hide. This would allow them to be cut around later, still yielding a sizable area of usable hide. Both wet and dry dying can provide excellent results. It’s mainly up to the preference of the leather worker what they are more comfortable with, and what would would better with the type of dye they are using. Leather Painting vs Leather Dyeing

The Leather Finish is water-based and so is non-hazardous and non-flammable. The Finish is extremely hard wearing and long lasting. It's a clear thin liquid that is easy to apply and offers superior scuff and scratch resistance compared to standard leather finishes. Usually, before applying lacquer finishes, an important tip is to apply a thin coating of liquid wax finish. However, when water-soluble dyes are used prior to lacquering, the result is always awesome. On the other hand, it doesn’t work well with acrylic paint finishes. One factor to consider when working outside is if the work area is under trees or anything else that might drop debris onto the leather piece. Usually this isn’t a big issue, just something to keep in mind. A patio table with an umbrella raised can be an ideal location. It is best when leaves, acorns, or anything animals might drop is kept away from falling onto the piece during the several stages of drying. Work Area – The Temperature Because it undergoes no sanding, the surface can have minor imperfections. These might be from where a cow rubbed up against a fence, a small cut they might have received, or scrapes from everyday life. Full grain hides without many blemishes are the most prized, as they are least common and are the most visually appealing.Since manually applying dye via a brush or dauber requires repetitive accuracy, pulling is preferred as a single pull can have the whole item covered in just the same way, similar to dipping. Dipping In general, when speaking about animal leathers, those from larger animals such as cattle are referred to as “hides”. Those from smaller animals such as rabbits or pigs are referred to as skins. Also in terms of volume, cattle leather makes up about 67% of the total annual leather production around the world. Cattle – Bulls Steers are castrated male cattle. They are one of the most popular types of animal leather sought. There are also many more steers kept than bulls, so steer leather is more widely available. It works well for leather applications such as saddlery, belts, some shoes, and other strap items. Cattle – Cows The double shoulder cut of a leather hide comes from the shoulder area of the animals. It is essentially the entire shoulder area from the hide. This area generally has a firm, yet malleable and flexible feel to it. Shoulder cuts work well for tooling. Bend Leather Cut Some leather workers prefer dyeing leather wet, and some while it’s dry. When wet, the dye can be more evenly pulled into the fibers and provide for a smooth, even color. However, if the moisture varies across the leather piece, it could lead to variations in exact color matching across the piece as wetter areas might pull in more dye. Also, dye applied to wet leather will appear darker than the final color it will be once it dries.
