The status of Adelina Patti and the reports of her still roaming the house are enough to make this property a famous location for any fans of paranormal occurrences, but the unexplained phenomena in Craig Y Nos also add to its haunted status. One day in the 1630’s, a housekeeper saw five disembodied candles, floating around the house's newly plastered "blue room."
At Margam, ghost sightings have been claimed over the years. One frequently reported ghost is said to be Robert Scott. He is a long-time gamekeeper at the castle who is assumed to be one of the spirits. It is believed that a poacher killed Scott, and his ghost is still on the property. But a snake had concealed itself amongst the logs and, as Adam de Rupe began stoking his fire, the creature suddenly sank its teeth into him and fulfilled the prophecy. Located half an hour outside of Welshpool in north Wales is Penyfford Farm – a house once coined the ‘UK’s most haunted’. Over 300 paranormal occurrences have been reported at the location, including carvings on the walls, muffled voices in empty rooms, and the appearing figure of a pregnant girl. The haunted houses of Wales present a diverse and intriguing contrast. Some are almost lost amidst lush grounds and stand hidden away from the prying eyes of all but the most intrepid ghost hunter. Others are well known tourist haunts and yet their ghost stories are only ever whispered in hushed tones for fear of offending or even raising the spirits. The Skirrid Inn is regarded as one of the most haunted spots in the UK despite its lengthy and horrifying history of cruelty against people. This location has been the subject of so many reports of paranormal activity that it has developed a reputation as being both frightful and highly threatening.As the magnificent mansion has been a part of Llanelli since the early 18th century and is one of Carmarthenshire’s most ancient buildings, some unsettling claims have been made from within its walls. A ghostly face is seen peering out of the bedroom door, also Robert Wynn himself is seen walking around the house, greeting people with ghostly “hello”! Elsewhere on the second floor two women spirits have been encountered, one of them seems distressed. Could this be both of Roberts two wives? Originally an abbey during the 11th Century, the Gothic-styled castle we see today was built as a country house during the 19th Century, and the sheer volume of spooky goings-on at the Port Talbot beauty spot have given the castle the reputation of being one of the UK's most haunted houses. But any fears she may have had, were soon dispelled by the sheer opulence of the room and, reasoning that they probably hadn’t wanted a stranger wandering the castle at night, the woman sat by the fire, and began reading her bible. The next morning, five maidservants were found dead in their beds there. A charcoal stove, left burning to speed the drying of the plaster, had asphyxiated them as they slept.
Her ghost has walked the building ever since and appears to have been particularly active in the 1980’s, when the premises were occupied by a television facilities company. Lucy Walters, who was born at Roch Castle in 1630, demonstrated her Royalist sympathies by becoming the mistress of Charles 11. It is her ghost that is believed to haunt the house which is now a shrine to the memory of her famous son. Needless to say, with such a sinister pedigree, The Skirrid Mountain Inn can offer many a ghostly tale to chill the blood. Because of her spirit and how unfairly she was killed, history has marked Gwenllian as a ferocious warrior and a free spirit. It is said that Gwenllian’s decapitated body still wanders the castle grounds looking for justice. A grey-hooded figure has allegedly been witnessed roaming through the castle and the bloody battlefield where she was killed. However, there is another side to my welcoming homeland. Along its labyrinth of winding roads through the mountains and hills you can unearth its many gruesome histories, secrets and paranormal hotspots many overlook. North Wales breathes history and with that many fascinating tales of all the people who have come before us and seemingly don’t want to leave or to be forgotten. Ghost stories are confused, with one 19th century ghost hunter saying that there was said to be a female ghost, but no one was able to explain who she was. I’ve heard another ghost story about the place: that the ghost is a member of the family from the 19th or early 20th Century who went mad at finding out her children had been killed in the Napoleonic/Crimean/First World War. What the poor woman didn’t realise was that they intended to enjoy a little spooky sport at her expense, by putting her in a bedroom that was known to be haunted. So here ends our journey through some of North Wales’ most haunted locations. As ghost hunters we seek the unexplained so where better to do this than one of these fascinating locations. You will not be disappointed. The house was later lived in by another famous face, British Army General, John Yorke, who acquired the house in 1861 where he lived in retirement. The pub, which is nearly 500 years old, is said to have had hundreds of reported sightings of the supernatural. The grand staircase, situated to the left as you enter is haunted by two spectral children who sometimes appear and then disappear, but who are mostly heard rather than seen as they enjoy a ghostly game, their phantom whoops and giggles clearly audible to bemused witnesses. Once owned by the noble Seymour family, only the shell of this once-great castle remains. While architecturally striking, Berry Pomeroy Castle tends to leave visitors rather unsettled. A female spirit named Bridget wanders the jail looking for her child who also perished within the walls. A darker more mischievous energy also frequents the jail and is often seen. I, myself, have had my name whispered in my ear when alone in the jail. The condemned man’s cell is much less welcoming at night with a heavy atmosphere that would make even the most seasoned ghost hunter very uneasy. Whistling and faint moaning can be heard at the dead of night within the jails freezing halls. Sighs and voices have been heard, with others who have stayed there reporting dragging noises across rooms leaving them terrified.
