Dandelion isn’t the only familiar face from The Last Wish . In The Last Wish Geralt saves a man from a curse and unites him with his princess love. The man offers him anything he wishes as a reward. Geralt invokes the Law of Surprise, claiming that which the man has, but doesn’t yet know he has. This ends up being a child that his lover is carrying. Geralt hoped the child would be a boy he could train as a witcher. After the exchange Geralt leaves, promising to return in six years to collect his boon. In Sword of Destiny, we learn what became of that Child of Surprise. I’ll be lying if I say I’m not worried about how I’ll fare with the series after reading Sword of Destiny. I have heard many mixed things regarding the main novels of the series, especially in its ending, but tons of praises seem to have been given to the first two collections of short stories. I fully understand that technically this is Sapkowski’s first published collection of stories in The Witcher Saga even though it chronologically takes place after The Last Wish. But still, I expected more out of it because I enjoyed reading The Last Wish, and of course, I love the video games adaptation so much. However, I felt so mixed about this collection of short stories. Dominant Species Genes: Dryads have to breed with human or elf men and the child will always be a dryad. The children will very rarely have their father's features like hair or eyes. This may be related to the dryads' demonstrated ability to turn fully human girls into dryads.

And this was published in the 90's. It's always disappointing when this mentality shows up in an old fantasy book, but at least it's kind of predictable. It's like finding racism in a 19th century travel-adventure novel. But today... This should not be left unnoticed. Hero of Another Story: Sh'eenaz doesn't have much screen time in A Little Sacrifice, but it's her offscreen actions that resolve both the conflicts involving the impending war with the Fish People and her dysfunctional relationship with the local duke. Braenn, Geralt, and Ciri arrive in Duen Canell, the heart of Brokilon. Freixenet's wounds have been treated, as the dryads intend for him to impregnate some of them. Ciri realizes that the dryads plan to keep her—the dryads bolster their numbers by taking and brainwashing young girls into their culture, as they had done to Braenn. Geralt meets Eithne and the two discuss destiny, which Eithne believes is a "doubled-edged sword". However, it does confuse me how Geralt is sometimes completely calm and executes plans perfectly, but becomes somewhat of a bumbling man in other stories, particularly around Yennefer. The next scene opens at night as Geralt wakes up to find himself being treated by a sorceress and healer, Visenna. Up until this point, he had always wondered if he would ever cross paths with the woman who gave him up to the witchers. He had thought about her from time to time over the years contemplating what he would tell to her, what question he would ask should they ever meet. He assumed it would cause some twisted pleasure to him. Now that the meeting has happened, he's too tired and weak and plans to look her in the eyes and ask his question the next day in the daylight. However Visenna steers Geralt to rest stating he won't want that anymore when he's awake again. By asking rhetorical questions she further dismisses the idea of doing what he plans as it won't change anything. As she finally says a goodbye, Geralt tries to resist her soothing activity and prevent her from disappearing again, but fails.A Little Sacrifice was okay, but the development and the conclusion of the character stories here felt rushed. It would have benefited more for not being a short story. And finally we arrive at the last two short stories: Sword of Destiny and Something More. We finally meet Ciri in the books for the first time in the titular title, Sword of Destiny. I liked this one. Ciri is one of my favorite characters in the games, and I am happy I get to see Geralt and Ciri's first moment of encounter. As for Something More, I feel the TV show adaptation did a better job on this part of the story. I still enjoyed reading the ending of this story, but overall, I feel like the execution in the TV show has more of an impact on me than this one. Just as the river Yaruga comes into view, Geralt slips into one final dream about the same crossing. In the dream, the witcher sees what looks like pandemonium on the banks. The crossing is the scene of quite a commotion as soldiers retreating from the Nilfgaardian assault are preventing peasants who are also trying to flee from crossing the river. The soldiers are intent on getting themselves across and then preventing the Nilfgaardians from following. They tell the peasants to get out their axes and build a raft if they want to cross, the ferry is the army's. The book, published in Polish 1992 and English in 2015, is comprised of more short stories and follows on from the first book in the series. Overall there are a total of six stories, and many of them were originally written and published before the first Witcher book known as " The Last Wish." Bus Crash: Essi Daven, Geralt's Temporary Love Interest in A Little Sacrifice, is bluntly mentioned to have died of small pox four years later in Vizima.

A Shard of Ice - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Yennefer and Geralt angst (with hints of a certain infamous stuffed unicorn 🦄 ) I Need a Freaking Drink: When Vell suggests pouring some vodka down an injured Geralt's throat, Yurga says it's a stupid idea but he'll take it himself because he needs a drink. Screening the Call: Calanthe makes it clear she'd rather kill Geralt than let him take Ciri away to become a witcher. Despite this, Ciri still ends up in Geralt's care, because You Can't Fight Fate. In contrast, we see truly how volatile Yennefer is in this book; she’s manipulative, impulsive, and quite sexually liberated. I liked this about her, she’s a character who is strong, and unpredictable, which made her scenes all the more fun and intriguing. She reminded me of the character Lanfear from the Wheel of Time series; she was also a character I both loved and hated. Yennefer’s ambitions and goals always governed over any feelings she had towards Geralt, and therefore their encounters were always laced with tension. I really felt for Geralt, I wanted him to have love and companionship and although he seemed to be a bit of a magnet for women, I wanted him to be with Yennefer and no one else. I’ve been told by a few friends who play The Witcher game that there will be another love interest when the character Triss is introduced, so I’m eager to meet her and possibly change my mind! Like I said, I got far too caught up in the drama!Atop a hill there is a menhir, an obelisk, which was placed there with magic. Engraved upon it are the names of the fourteen who feel in the defence of Sodden. Geralt decides to climb the hill and once he reaches the stone he begins to read their names. The Witcher was familiar with many of them, including Triss, Lawdbor of Murivel, Lytta Neyd, and Old Gorazd. A young woman emanating a cold chill approaches and kneels before the stone, hiding the fourteenth name from Geralt before he can read it. He knows who she is, a woman who takes those by the hand at their time of passing; the lady of death. Geralt admits she is all he feared in life, she was always on his footsteps but never quite at him. He lost everything he loves in his opinion and wishes her to take him, as he believe the final name on the stone is Yennifer of Vengerberg. Next thing Yurga calls him, and Geralt admits he had fallen asleep in the heat and was within another dream. The Witcher questions the merchant on who the fourteenth name is, and to his relief it is someone unknown to Geralt, a sorcerer by the name of Yoel Grethen of Carreras. Mister Seahorse: Played for laughs in A Little Sacrifice, when the mermaid points out she can't mate with the prince, since he as human can't carry her roe in any other way than in a hat.
