About this deal

Burgundy's locomotive is in Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway livery, which perhaps suggests that this type did, indeed, run of the Rajputana metre gauge system where the India railway scenes were filmed? North West Frontier (USA: Flame Over India; Australia: Empress of India) [3] is a 1959 British Eastmancolor adventure film starring Kenneth More, Lauren Bacall, Herbert Lom, Wilfrid Hyde-White and I. S. Johar. The CinemaScope film was produced by Marcel Hellman and directed by J. Lee Thompson. It was a commercial success at the British box-office in 1959. The film's success led to J. Lee Thompson beginning his American career as a director. [4] The film was one of seven made by Rank which were bought for distribution in the US by 20th Century Fox. [19] Lauren Bacall called it a "good little movie ... with a stupid title" (referring to the US title, Flame Over India). [20] John Masters (June 13, 2002). Bugles and a Tiger. Cassell Military (June 13, 2002). p.190. ISBN 0304361569. The force was augmented with No. 2 Coy. Bombay Native Artillery in 1875, when that company relieved the men of Jacob's Rfles manning the guns of the force headquarters at Jacobabad. [69] General Staff Branch, Army Headquarters, India. More and his cohorts go from one hair-raising experience to another. They must dodge broken rails, an almost missing bridge over a yawning chasm, a spy and the usual hostile tribesman. The movie is worth watching for the scene in which the little party crosses an almost destroyed bridge. I knew how it would turn out and I still couldn't help cringing. I was planning a 'Part 2' post concerning my attempts to find an historically plausible alternative for the train in North West Frontier, but your post prompts me to post a sort of 'Part 1(a)'

The following information is from a supplement called "Railway Films of the Raj" by Ray Ellis, published with the Indian Railway Study Group Newletter No.9, in January 1993. First World War) [ edit ] Madras Regiment War Memorial, Bangalore, mentions lives lost in the North West Frontier by the Madras Sappers The Frontier Revolt of 1897-8 saw the Kohat and Derajat batteries in action again, earning the honours T IRAH and P UNJAB F RONTIER. [102]I don't know why I did not focus on this combination, but, then, I think my layout needs to be of the broad gauge system, and for the reasons already set out, I think 3mm scale will be the most practical option for me. It would be a shame not to see Mr Lunn's train in the flesh, however. Wilkinson-Latham, Robert (1977). North-West Frontier 1837–1947, Osprey Publishing. London. ISBN 0-85045-275-9. Later that day, while stopping to refill the engine's water tank, Scott walks into the pump house to find Van Leyden allowing Prince Kishan to stand dangerously close to the pump's rapidly spinning flywheel. In the evening Van Leyden refuses alcohol and the group correctly deduce he is Muslim. He explains this by saying he is half Indian. During the night, Mr. Van Leyden again approaches the prince, only to notice Lady Windham watching him. We are in British India, Moslem rebels want to kill a young Hindu prince and thus killing his family blood line. The British army are charged with the task of ensuring the prince is safely escorted from the troubled provinces. The duty falls to one intrepid Captain Scott, the only chance to achieve the aim is by train, with his allies on board being a rather unique group of individuals, can Scott achieve the mission against the mounting odds?. This film was screened last night on PBS. The title "Flame over India" caught my attention. Noting that the movie was made in 1959, I thought this would be one of the slow paced older movies. Surprise! The movie keeps you on the edge of your couch all the time. Some salient features:

Jaipur; Dahar Ka Balaji; Nindhar Benar; Bhaton Ki Gali; Chomun Samod; Govindgarh Malk; Ringas Junction; Baori Thikria; Palsana; Goriya; Sikar Junction, a distance of some 123 miles. I again include some pictures of the film, which are necessary to illustrate my research. These are taken with my camera pointed at my computer screen and, so, the quality is awful! These moments, in which anti-imperial arguments are at least aired, make me think that J. Lee Thompson was straining to impart a liberal message into what was nonetheless unavoidably a mainstream film. As Steve Chibnall points out in his biography of the director, Thompson identified as very left wing at the time, so we can safely conclude that his own views worked their way in. The 1st and 2nd Regiments joined the Bombay line in 1885 as the 5th and 6th Bombay Cavalry respectively.
