About this deal

Anthony Edward Tudor Browne CBE (born 11 September 1946 [1]) is a British writer and illustrator of children's books, primarily picture books. Browne has written or illustrated over fifty books, and received the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2000. [2] [3] [4] From 2009 to 2011 he was Children's Laureate. [5] [6] Anthony Browne’s dad was inspired to write the book when he found his dad’s dressing gown. If you were writing a book about a member of your family, which of their possessions would inspire you?

When he finished school Browne intended to become a painter, but being short of money he took a job as a medical illustrator, producing detailed paintings of operations for Manchester Royal Infirmary. After three years he grew tired of the job's repetitiveness and moved on to design greeting cards for Gordon Fraser. He designed cards for five years before he started writing and illustrating his own books. Compare this book with Gorilla by Anthony Browne, which has a similar theme. What are the similarities and differences? The young narrator of this sweet, heartwarming picture-book tribute to mothers describes his own mom's many wonderful qualities, from her skills as cook and juggler to her butterfly-like beauty and armchair-like comfiness. He concludes with the declaration that he loves his mom, and that she loves him, and always will... What is brilliant is the typical ‘fantastic’ description we assign with mothers is contrasted by descriptions of how she can also ‘roar’ like a lion. This can help children understand and discuss the role of parents. What is the job of a mum? Similes are used in Browne’s descriptions, ‘my mum’s as beautiful as a butterfly’, with brilliant illustrations that extend the meaning of the text. In particular, ‘My mum is...a brilliant juggler’, Browne has the mother juggling a tea pot, house, car and a purse to name but a few. Children who find decoding text difficult could use the pictures to help them access and understand the words and text. The similes and pictures can be used to explore creative and descriptive writing as an example to extend vocabulary and creativity. Children can discuss and come up with their own similes to describe their mothers or other family members. Compare this book with My Mum by Anthony Browne. How has the author changed the structure? Why do you think he has done that?Browne and writer Annalena McAfee won the 1985 Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis, Picture Book category, for Mein Papi, nur meiner! (The Visitors Who Came to Stay). He also won the Kurt Maschler Award "Emil" three times, which annually (1982 to 1999) recognised one British "work of imagination for children, in which text and illustration are integrated so that each enhances and balances the other." [15] Browne was a winner for Gorilla (Julia MacRae Books, 1983), Alice's Adventure in Wonderland (MacRae, 1988) and Voices in the Park (Doubleday, 1998), as the illustrator of all three books and the writer of two. [15] In many ways, the book is like a poem in structure. Write your own poem about a member of your family using the structure of the book. In 2001–2002 Browne took a job as writer and illustrator at Tate Britain, working with children using art as a stimulus to inspire visual literacy and creative writing activities. It was during this time that Browne conceived and produced The Shape Game (Doubleday, 2003). This picture book is wonderful to share with children as there is so much to look at, discuss and wonder at.

Talk about

Although the words in the book are few, they are carefully selected and there is so much to talk about in the pictures. You can tell from Dad’s face that there is love there and it is interesting to talk to little ones about how they know that, or whether they disagree. Anthony Browne". Walker Books. Archived from the original on 14 December 2007 . Retrieved 26 December 2007. Browne's debut book both as writer and as illustrator was Through the Magic Mirror, published by Hamish Hamilton in 1976. A Walk in the Park followed next year and gained a cult following [ citation needed] and Bear Hunt (1979) was more successful commercially. [9] His breakthrough came with Gorilla, published by Julia MacRae in 1983, based on one of his greeting cards. For it he won the Kate Greenaway Medal from the Library Association, recognising the year's best children's book illustration by a British subject. [10] Flood, Alison (9 June 2009). The Magritte of the pre-schoolers, Browne's illustrations are among the most distinctive and surreal of any children's artist. A beautiful tribute to a very special dad in a dressing gown The Scotsman He was a highly commended runner-up [a] for an edition of Alice in Wonderland (1988), [11] he won the 1992 Medal for Zoo [12] and he was again highly commended for Willy's Pictures (2000). [11] Gorillas are frequently featured in Browne's books, as he has said he is fascinated by them. He was once asked to present a children's programme, whilst sitting in a cage of gorillas, and despite being badly bitten by one of them he completed the interview before being taken to hospital. [13] his character "Willy" is said to be based on himself. [14]However, this book is not a favourite of 23-month old little-AJ. In fact, he avoids this book whenever he can. His expression looked doubtful whenever this book was read to him, like he wasn't too sure what exactly this book was all about. He is probably unable to associate his mum as the brown hair woman with floral prints all over, with drastic transformation of appearance from Lion to rhinoceros to a little kitten and butterfly and superwoman. It's a child-friendly, warm characterisation of the hectic general life of mums- shopping, looking after children, working, taking care of family when they are unwell, patching up broken toys, dealing with broken household appliances etc.- and is an illustrated tribute to how fantastic all mothers are. It shows just how reliant families- and in particular, children- tend to be on this one figure, who loves and cares for all, frequently without taking time out for herself to do the things she wants (or to just relax!). For children, I feel like it's a window into the intricacies of the loving parent-child relationship, and for adults, an almost Thank you note from the author to all mums and the monumental effort they put into family life.
