About this deal

I still remember the DJI Phantom 2 Vision drone with its bulbous white camera and no gimbal. I look at the 1080p footage I originally shot today and I’m aghast that I thought it was even a little bit good. The same thing happened with the Phantom Vision 2+ which was fitted with a gimbal. Wow, we all thought, this footage is way better. It was a bit but, in hindsight, it was still bloody awful. Nevertheless, DJI’s cameras continued to improve, and each time this writer and many others praised the company for pushing the cinematic envelope. Every one was better than the last. By the time DJI’s first aerial 4K camera was released many of us thought it couldn’t get any better. Well we were wrong again because the Hasselblad camera fitted to this beast of a drone is on another level.

Supported by the DJI Mavic 3 Pro Hasselblad camera and 70mm medium tele camera only. The 70mm medium tele camera only supports shooting Sphere panoramas but cannot generate panorama photos. That’s what everyone is wondering. We have some information from our source, and some speculation based on competition and industry knowledge. First, let’s go with what we’ve discussed with our source. Measured with Mavic 3 flying at a constant speed of 32.4 kph in a windless environment at sea level until the battery reached 0%. Data is for reference only. Please pay attention to the RTH reminder on the DJI Fly app during flight. The Mavic 3 is around the same size as the Mavic 2, though opens out a little larger. Every version is supplied with a clip-round case to protect the handsome camera gimbal (assuming you can live without symmetry). Getting it on and off takes a little getting used to but gives that professional feel the device deserves and solves the issue of flapping props and at-risk cameras in drones of similar proportions. It’s no harder than the clip-on plastic protectors on other models, but it’s doing more work.

DJI has put a premium on its flagship folding drone, but does the DJI Mavic 3 justify its price hike?

But more than that, it was the beginning of a new way of thinking around form and function. The Mavic Pro was immensely more portable than the Phantom line, folding down to a really compact size. It also had better flight time, and a much smaller and innovative controller. And while that controller may look slightly dated now against the current crop (Mavic AIR 2, AIR 2S controllers), it was really compact, and got the job done. Branching out I have to confess that when I first heard that the Mavic 3 Pro was likely to include three cameras, I was skeptical about how effective and useful the two telephoto cameras would be. This was simply down to the fact that the Mavic 3 telephoto camera was extremely limited at launch, to the point of being pretty much pointless. Then with the Mavic 3 Classic, which had a few reductions in video specs, including the removal of the Apple ProRes format for video, it felt like DJI might be giving up on the multi-camera approach.

The Mavic 3 series uses the DJI Fly app, which also powers the Mavic Mini, Mini 2, Mavic Air 2, and Air 2S. First introduced in November 2019 with the Mavic Mini, the pared down, intuitive interface showcases all the photo modes on the same screen. When switching out of Auto mode and into Manual, or Pro mode, the bottom-right-hand corner gives you sliders that allow you to adjust white balance, ISO, shutter speed, aperture and choose JPEG or Raw+JPEG imagery. Resolution can be adjusted once the 'Video' option is activated. DJI worked with Swedish camera maker Hasselblad to create a custom L2D-20c camera for the Mavic 3 series. Placed on the bottom, the main camera features a 20MP, Four Thirds CMOS sensor that has a 24mm (equiv.) lens with 84º FOV and variable F2.8-11 aperture. It can shoot still images in 12-bit Raw format. The entire dual-camera system is placed on a 3-axis mechanical gimbal. The above figure is for reference only. Due to different production batches, DJI provides two kinds of gimbal protectors that are slightly different in appearance. The two gimbal protectors have the same function and can be used in the same way. The extra hovering time available combined with the number of options available does encourage hovering with eyes away from the aircraft which isn’t an approach recommended by many aviation authorities. When it comes to controllers, except for the Mavic 3 Pro Cine Premium Bundle, which is only available with the DJI RC Pro, you can choose between the DJI RC and DJI RC Pro. Both are smart controllers featuring 5.5-inch touchscreens – the RC Pro is slightly larger, 43% heavier and offers up to four hours of battery life compared to three and a brighter screen. Both are excellent overall. The Pro model offers many more features, including a stronger signal, but it’s much more expensive. DJI Mavic 3 Pro: Features and flight

DJI Mavic 3 Cine supports Apple ProRes 422 HQ, Apple ProRes 422, Apple ProRes 422 LT and H.264/H.265 encoding, while Mavic 3 only supports H.264/H.265 encoding. This new DJI RC Pro controller only comes with the Cine Premium Combo, with the Standard and Fly More bundles instead coming with the DJI RC-N1 pad. (Image credit: Future) The Mavic 3's Standard version and Fly More Combo cost almost 40% more than their Mavic 2 Pro equivalents did at launch, which suggests the Mavic 3 is more of a professional drone than a consumer model. The DJI Air 2S replaces the Mavic 2 Pro at the top of the consumer line with a 1-inch sensor, while the Mavic 3 features a Four Thirds sensor in the main camera. Design and controller

So that was the start. In addition to the 4K video, the original Mavic Pro also worked with the original DJI Goggles, those white ones. They were a little clunky then, but the image quality was terrific and that was also something of a breakthrough. People trying them out at the NYC launch event were blown away. Remember these? The release of the Mavic 3 series is long-awaited and for the most part, it delivers. My disappointment comes from the fact that more abilities to customize your photo settings weren't included. DJI periodically updates its firmware, so the company could surprise us in the future. And since they never cannibalize their product line, I can't help but wonder what's next? What's yet to come might offer the Hasselblad color profile, an optical zoom, and possibly even interchangeable lenses on an aircraft that can easily be carried around. With the Mavic 3 series, you can point the camera toward the sun and it will create a sunburst instead of blowing out and entire area. The folded dimensions of the Mavic 3 are 212×96.3x90.3mm, while its unfolded size is 347.5×283x107.7 mm. This makes it similar to the Mavic 2 Pro when folded, with the unfolded size being slightly larger.
